ICC T20 World Cup 2022: Australia’s Top Three Players

Australia are the envy of the T20 scene and it will be up to the likes of England and India to knock them off their perch.

The T20 World Cup is fast approaching, and Australia will feel they have the edge as this year’s edition will be staged on home soil. Australia boasts plenty of strength in depth, and last month, they announced their full squad for the tournament.

Coming into this tournament as reigning champions, expectation levels will soar for Australia. They have redefined the game over the past few years, and a cursory glance at our recommended Australian betting sites shows they will carry some favour. For example, at Palmerbet, Australia is currently trading at a short 4/1 to mount a successful title defence.

But who could shine for the Aussies? We have picked out three key stars and we will explain what they bring to the party.

David Warner in T20 World Cup 2022

What better place to start than at the top of the order with David Warner? The ebullient left-hander likes to attack at every possible opportunity, and he has every shot in his locker from pulls to sweeps, to cover drives.

One of the survivors of the successful 2021 T20 World Cup campaign, Warner was named the Player of the Tournament as he racked up 249 runs at an impressive average of 48.

Questions persisted over Warner’s form heading into the previous T20 World Cup, and he was benched for the last few games of the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL campaign.

Nevertheless, it has been a spectacular turnaround for Warner, and his fearless attitude will serve him well. Warner likes to turn on the style and we can expect some big scores from him once again.

Josh Hazlewood in T20 World Cup 2022

It wasn’t that long ago that Josh Hazelwood suffered a dip in form, and he had to go back to the drawing board to reassess things. Indeed, he went nearly four years without playing a single T20 match, and there were concerns that he wasn’t a good fit for the format.

However, a few tweaks as well as some IPL experience has seen him scale the top of the ICC T20 bowler rankings. Now, he has played more T20s in the last two years than in the first decade of his career.

The conditions will suit the likes of Hazelwood, and while the Aussies haven’t been merciless in the death overs, Hazelwood will attend to that over the next few weeks.

Mitchell Starc in T20 World Cup 2022

Although he hasn’t played the volume of T20 cricket you may expect for a player of his calibre, Mitchell Starc, who is perhaps a greater exponent of the Test version, is still deadly with the new ball in his hand.

He is a tall seamer who can get it to swing in all conditions and his stats aren’t too shabby – 69 wickets from 53 matches at an average of 22, with an economy of 7.55.

Australia’s bowling department is exceptionally strong and while the likes of Hazelwood may glean more attention, it would be amiss to overlook Starc.
