CWI (Cricket West Indies) has announced that Shamarh Brooks will replace Hetmyer in their team for the T20 World Cup to be played in Australia in November. As part of the West Indies squad for the upcoming edition of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Twenty20 World Cup, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has today informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) of Shamarh Brooks assuming the position of Shimron Hetmyer in the squad.

Due to family reasons, the CWI Selection Panel made the decision that Hetmyer would not be able to travel to Australia on Saturday, October 1, as he had requested, as he missed his rescheduled flight. There would have been no chance for him to leave Guyana today, Monday, October 3, since flight availability was a challenge. This would mean, unfortunately, he would miss the first Twenty20 International against Australia at the Metricon Stadium on Wednesday, October 5.

However, Hetmyer informed the Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams on Monday (October 3) evening that he would not be able to make it to the airport in time for his flight to New York on Tuesday morning (October 4). The CWI Board of Directors was informed this afternoon that the selection panel of the team for the T20 World Cup had unanimously decided to replace Shimron Hetmyer in our squad with Shamarh Brooks,” said Adams.

“It is true that we had to change Shimron’s flight from Saturday to Monday due to family reasons, but it has been made clear to him that if there is any further delay or issue with his travel to Australia, then we will have no choice but to replace him in the squad. Since we are not willing to compromise our team’s preparation for this extremely important global event, we are not prepared to compromise our ability to prepare..”

The two-match Twenty20 International series scheduled for October 5 and October 7 will be missing Brooks, who is replacing Hetmyer for the T20 World Cup 2022. Brooks will fly out to Australia later in the week and will not be able to participate in the two-match series, as he has been named as Hetmyer’s replacement. During the recently concluded CPL, Shamarh had a chance to play for the CPL team in the latter stages and delivered some strong performances in the latter stages of the tournament.

He will fly out as soon as possible this week to Australia and I wish him and all the squad all the very best for the tournament.” Adams continued. The West Indies will begin the T20 World Cup campaign by playing Scotland on October 17 in the opening group stage. The team is a part of Group B which includes Scotland, Zimbabwe and Ireland.
