CSK All IPL Final Match List

Chennai Super Kings is the most consistent franchise in Indian Premier League (IPL) history. They have played 10 finals out of their 14 seasons, underlining their dominance.

Led by the inspirational MS Dhoni, CSK has won four IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021. They have also finished runners-up five times in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2019.

As CSK eyes more glory in future editions, let’s revisit their journey through every IPL final they have played from 2008 to 2023.

2008 Final vs Rajasthan Royals

In the inaugural IPL 2008 season, a young CSK led by India veteran Sourav Ganguly reached the final. They defeated Kings XI Punjab by 9 wickets in the semifinal.

In the final, they faced the unheralded Rajasthan Royals captained by Shane Warne. RR batted first and scored 164/7, with Yusuf Pathan scoring the highest with 56 runs.

CSK could only muster 163/9 in response, losing the final by three wickets. Yusuf Pathan earned the Man of the Match award for his performance.

2010 Final vs Mumbai Indians

In 2010, CSK returned stronger under their new captain cool MS Dhoni. After finishing third in the league stage, they won the semifinal against Deccan Chargers by 38 runs.

In the final, they met Sachin Tendulkar’s Mumbai Indians. Batting first, MI scored 168/5 with Saurabh Tiwary top-scoring with 65.

Riding on quickfire fifties from Murali Vijay and Suresh Raina, CSK eased to a 22-run win with two balls to spare. Raina was awarded Player of the Match.

2011 Final vs Royal Challengers Bangalore

In 2011, CSK dominated the league stage and finished as runners-up. They defeated RCB by 43 runs in Qualifier 1 to advance to their third consecutive IPL final.

In the final, RCB won the toss and chose to bat first. They could only score 147/4 in 20 overs, with Virat Kohli contributing 65 runs.

In response, Michael Hussey’s unbeaten 63* and Murali Vijay’s 95 runs led CSK to a comfortable six-wicket victory. Hussey earned the Man of the Match award for his performance.

2012 Final vs Kolkata Knight Riders

In the 2012 season, CSK finished fourth in the league phase. However, they overcame tough challenges in the playoffs, defeating Mumbai (by 38 runs) and Delhi (by 6 wickets) to reach their fourth consecutive final.

Their opponents were the Kolkata Knight Riders led by Gautam Gambhir, aiming for their first IPL title. KKR batted first and posted a formidable 190/3 with Manvinder Bisla scoring 89 runs.

CSK fell short, losing by five wickets as KKR bowled them out for 182. Manvinder Bisla earned the Man of the Match award for his superb fifty.

2013 Final vs Mumbai Indians

In 2013, CSK finished atop the league table with 11 wins. They defeated Mumbai by 48 runs in Qualifier 1 to advance to their fifth IPL final.

In the final, MI chose to field first. Boosted by Mike Hussey’s 86, CSK set a huge target of 192/1 in 20 overs. However, MI comfortably chased it down, reaching the target in 18.4 overs with 23 balls remaining. Kieron Pollard earned the Man of the Match award for his unbeaten 60 off 32 balls.

2015 Final vs Mumbai Indians

After serving a two-year ban in 2016-17, CSK returned more determined in IPL 2018 under their captain, ‘Captain Cool’ Dhoni. They secured second place in the league phase with nine victories.

In Qualifier 1, MI limited them to 162/8. CSK suffered a 23-run defeat as archrivals MI claimed their second IPL title. Lendl Simmons was named Man of the Match for his unbeaten 68, which dismantled CSK. Dhoni’s team finished as runners-up once again.

2018 Final vs Sunrisers Hyderabad

Dhoni’s lions returned stronger in 2018 after their two-year ban. They topped the league stage with 18 points and won nine games out of 14.

In Qualifier 1 clash against SRH, Ambati Rayudu starred with 100 to post over 175/7. CSK restricted Kane Williamson’s army to 140/8 to win by eight wickets. Shane Watson smashed a brilliant hundred as CSK lifted their third IPL trophy.

2019 Final vs Mumbai Indians

In 2019, CSK led by MS Dhoni finished as runners-up in the league stage with 16 points, victorious in 10 out of their 14 matches.

They defeated Delhi by six wickets in Qualifier 2, setting up a title match against familiar rivals MI. Mumbai batted first and managed 149/8, with Jasprit Bumrah shining with figures of 2/14.

Heartbreakingly, CSK narrowly missed out by just one run, scoring 148/7 in reply.

2021 Final vs Kolkata Knight Riders

After a tough 2020 season where they finished seventh and missed the playoffs, CSK bounced back strongly under Captain Cool in 2021. They secured the second spot in the league stage to reach their 11th IPL final.

In Qualifier 1 against Delhi Capitals, MS Dhoni played a vintage innings, scoring an unbeaten 18 runs off just six balls to secure a thrilling four-wicket win on the final delivery.

Facing Eoin Morgan’s KKR in the final, Faf du Plessis led from the front with a blistering 86 runs as CSK set a formidable target of 192/3 batting first. KKR managed only 165/9 in response as CSK bowled them out to clinch their fourth IPL title.

2023 Final vs Gujarat Titans

In the IPL 2023 final match, MS Dhoni guided his team to their fifth title against IPL newcomers Gujarat Titans.

Gujarat, making their IPL debut, clinched their inaugural IPL season under the leadership of Hardik Pandya. In Qualifier 1 against Rajasthan Royals, CSK secured a 5-wicket victory to advance to their 10th IPL final.

In a rain-affected final held in Ahmedabad against GT, CSK successfully defended a challenging revised target in a thrilling match, thus joining Mumbai Indians as joint-record holders with five IPL titles.
