The Gujarat Titans finished eighth in the IPL last season with five wins and seven losses, and two games ending in washouts. Shubman Gill was named the new captain after Hardik Pandya moved to Mumbai Indians. The team initially struggled to find the right combination and adjust to Gill’s leadership, and they missed the presence of Mohammed Shami, who was out due to injury.

Gill’s form was inconsistent in the first half of the tournament, struggling to form a solid opening partnership with Wriddhiman Saha. However, once he started opening with Sai Sudharsan, his performance improved, ending the season with 426 runs, while Sudharsan finished with 527 runs.

During a recent meeting between IPL franchises and the BCCI, player retention was a hot topic. KKR and SRH opposed the mega auctions, with SRH owner Kavya Maran and KKR boss Shahrukh Khan advocating for teams to retain up to seven or eight players. Another major discussion point was the Impact Player rule, which many players opposed, arguing it prevented them from fielding their best XI and limited the role of all-rounders.

The BCCI announced that it would review these suggestions and make a decision by the end of August 2024.

Overseas Players Likely to Be Released

As the IPL 2025 mega auction approaches, the Gujarat Titans are considering releasing several overseas players.

Kane Williamson:

Williamson was retained despite missing the IPL 2023 season due to a knee injury. He played only three matches last season, scoring 27 runs. The Titans may release him but could consider rebuying him at a lower price in the mega auction.

Spencer Johnson:

The Australian pacer played five games for the Titans, managing to take just four wickets. Having shown a great promise at the start of his international and BBL career, he has failed to adjust to the conditions here in India. With a robust core of Indian pacers in Mohit Sharma, Umesh Yadav, and Mohammed Shami, the Titans may opt to release Johnson.

Matthew Wade:

Wade has had two tough seasons with the Titans over the past three years. He was retained ahead of IPL 2024 but has done very little, making 161 runs with a highest score of 35. His failure to make any telling contribution as opener or middle-order batsman will probably see him being released.

The Gujarat Titans aim to rebuild and strengthen their squad for the upcoming season. Releasing underperforming overseas players will allow them to make strategic additions and improve their performance in the next IPL season.
