Mumbai Indians had a challenging season in IPL 2024, finishing last on the points table. With Hardik Pandya taking over as captain from Rohit Sharma, the team managed only four wins while suffering ten losses. This marked a significant shift for the five-time IPL champions, and the results did not go as hoped.
Hardik, who was under immense pressure, faced criticism from both Mumbai Indians fans and the wider Indian cricket community. Despite this, the management backed him, but he couldn’t deliver the desired results in his first year as captain. However, he bounced back strongly in the T20 World Cup, scoring 144 runs and taking 11 wickets while serving as the vice-captain of the Indian team. As he prepares for his second season as Mumbai Indians’ skipper, all eyes will be on how he handles the challenges ahead.
During a recent meeting between IPL franchise owners and the BCCI, several important topics were discussed, including the number of player retentions. SRH and KKR were vocal about wanting at least 7-8 retentions to maintain a solid core for their teams. However, there wasn’t much input from other franchises on this matter.
The topic of mega auctions also stirred debate, with several franchises expressing concerns. They argued that mega auctions disrupt the investments made in players and undermine the brand value of both the teams and the players. KKR and SRH strongly opposed the idea of mega auctions but supported the idea of holding mini auctions before each IPL season.

As Mumbai Indians prepare for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, they may need to make some tough decisions regarding their overseas players. Here are three players who could be released ahead of the auction:
Mohammad Nabi
By the time the next IPL season begins, Mohammad Nabi will be 40 years old. While he remains an active part of Afghanistan’s white-ball team, the rigors of playing in the IPL might be too demanding at this stage of his career. The tournament requires peak fitness, and the franchise may look to bring in younger and fitter players who can contribute throughout the season. Last year, Nabi played seven matches for Mumbai Indians, taking just two wickets and scoring 35 runs. His age and declining performance might prompt the team to look for other options.
Luke Wood
The England pacer Luke Wood was brought in as a replacement for the injured Australian bowler Jason Behrendorff. Unfortunately, Wood only played two matches for Mumbai Indians, managing to take just one wicket. Despite being a like-for-like replacement for Behrendorff, Wood didn’t have enough opportunities to prove himself. With the franchise looking to rebuild, Wood could be one of the players they choose to release.
Dilshan Madushanka
Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka was signed by Mumbai Indians for 4.6 crores, but he was ruled out of the season due to a hamstring injury. He was replaced by South African pacer Kwena Maphaka, who also only played a few games. Madushanka’s career has been plagued by injuries, and he was recently ruled out of the T20I and ODI series against India due to another injury. Given his injury-prone nature and the uncertainty surrounding his fitness, the management might decide to look beyond him as they prepare for the mega auction.
