Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) put up a strong performance in IPL 2024, finishing as runners-up under the leadership of Pat Cummins. The team showed great understanding of their roles and played with a clear strategy, which helped them reach the final. SRH owner Kavya Maran also made her voice heard in the recent meeting between IPL franchise owners and the BCCI, where she proposed some significant changes for the future of the league.

Kavya Maran strongly opposed the idea of mega auctions, suggesting that mini auctions be held annually instead. She emphasized the importance of allowing franchises to retain seven to eight players or use Right to Match (RTM) cards.

Her argument was that franchises invest considerable time and resources into building a squad, and the mega auctions disrupt this continuity. Another major recommendation from her was to ban overseas players for two years if they withdraw from the season after enrolling in the auction, a problem that has plagued teams in recent years.

Several overseas players have pulled out at the last minute after being auctioned, forcing franchises to make hasty and often less effective replacements. This has disrupted team combinations and plans, creating unnecessary challenges for the franchises.

As SRH looks to the future and prepares for IPL 2025, they are likely to make some tough decisions about their overseas players. Here are three players they might release ahead of the next mega auction.

Wanindu Hasaranga

The former Sri Lankan captain Wanindu Hasaranga was brought into the SRH squad for 1.5 crores in IPL 2024 after being released by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), where he had been bought for 10 crores in 2022 and 2023. However, Hasaranga didn’t play for SRH as he pulled out, leading Kavya Maran to push for a two-year ban on such overseas players.

His recent form hasn’t helped his case either, with poor performances in both the T20 World Cup 2025 and the series against India. Given his struggles with both bat and ball, SRH might decide to release him and seek more consistent options.

Glenn Phillips

New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips might also be on the release list. Phillips was rarely used by SRH in the previous season, and releasing him could free up some funds for the franchise as they look to rebuild.

He played just five matches for SRH, scoring a total of 39 runs, with his best being 25 off 7 balls against Rajasthan Royals. While he is a fantastic fielder and has solid batting and wicketkeeping skills, SRH might opt to move on from him to focus on other areas of their squad.

Vijayakanth Viyaskanth

The young Lankan leg-spinner Vijayakanth Viyaskanth is another player who might be released. He was brought in as a replacement for Hasaranga but only played three games for SRH, taking just one wicket and conceding 86 runs in total. With an economy rate of 8.6, his performances didn’t quite meet expectations.

He made his IPL debut against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and played his final game of the season against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Qualifier 1. With limited impact in his appearances, SRH might decide to release him in search of more impactful players.
