Highest Partnership Against DC in IPL

Delhi Capitals, one of the first teams in the IPL since 2008, haven’t managed to win the big one yet. They’ve got a good bowling team, but sometimes opposing batters have had a field day against them. Let’s see which batsmen paired up and scored the most against Delhi in the IPL history.

Highest Partnership Against DC in IPL

#5. 5th Highest Partnership – Shikhar Dhawan & Kane Williamson

In a 2017 IPL match in Hyderabad between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals, Hyderabad batted first and scored 191 runs for 4 wickets. Their openers Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner did not do well, but Kane Williamson played a great innings.
Williamson and Dhawan put on 136 runs together for a big partnership. Williamson made 89 runs while Dhawan hit 70 runs. Their huge stand made it very difficult for Delhi to win. In the end, Delhi could only score 176 runs for 5 wickets. Sunrisers won the close match by 15 runs, thanks to the big partnership between Williamson and Dhawan.

#4. 4th Highest Partnership – Manish Pandey & Robin Uthappa

In the 2012 IPL tournament, Delhi Daredevils scored a big total against Pune Warriors. Pune started their chase poorly, losing their first wicket with just 2 runs. But then, two batsmen named Manish Pandey and Robin Uthappa turned the game around!
They batted very well together, putting on 145 runs without losing any more wickets. This huge partnership helped Pune win the match easily in only 16 overs. Pandey made 80 runs and Uthappa scored 60 runs. This is the 4th highest score any team has ever made against Delhi in the IPL history.

#3. 3rd Highest Partnership – Jos Buttler & Devdutt Padikkal

In an IPL 2022 match against Delhi, Rajasthan scored 222 runs for 2 wickets after batting first at Wankhede stadium. Openers Jos Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal attacked the Delhi bowlers, putting on 155 runs together which is the third highest opening partnership in IPL history.

Buttler was very aggressive, scoring 116 runs from 65 balls. Padikkal gave good support, making 56 runs from 35 balls. Rajasthan’s huge score of 222 runs was too much for Delhi as they fell 15 runs short of the target.

#2. 2nd Highest Partnership – Shikhar Dhawan & Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson has consistently dominated Delhi’s bowling attack in the IPL with significant partnerships. Besides the notable 136-run partnership, he also formed an unbroken 176-run stand with opener Shikhar Dhawan against Delhi in 2018.

Williamson remained unbeaten, scoring 83 runs off 53 balls, while Dhawan stayed not out with 92 runs off 50 balls. Hyderabad effortlessly chased down Delhi’s total of 187/5, reaching the target in 18.5 overs without losing any wickets.

#1. Highest Partnership – Chris Gayle & Virat Kohli

In 2012, Delhi faced a tough match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. Delhi decided to bowl first, and Bangalore’s openers, Chris Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan, got off to a solid start with a 44-run partnership. After Dilshan’s dismissal, Virat Kohli joined Gayle at the crease.

Gayle and Kohli then set a record by scoring the highest partnership in IPL history, adding 204 runs without losing another wicket. Gayle smashed 128 runs off 62 balls, while Kohli remained unbeaten with 73 runs. Bangalore ended their innings at 215/1, a total Delhi couldn’t chase down.

Conclusion

DC’s bowling attack has often crumbled in the face of sustained aggression from opposition batters. Batting giants like Gayle, Kohli, Buttler etc have compiled multiple 100+ stands against Delhi over the years.

Williamson too has been a thorn in DC’s flesh, forging big partnerships alongside Dhawan. If the Capitals desire to shed their underachiever tag, they need to find bowlers who can break threatening stands.
