Highest Partnership Against DC in IPL

Delhi Capitals, one of the original IPL teams since 2008, has yet to lift the coveted trophy. Over the years, they’ve had strong bowling attacks, but sometimes, opposition batters have turned the heat on them. Some incredible partnerships have taken shape against DC, leaving their bowlers struggling for answers.

#1 – Chris Gayle & Virat Kohli (204 runs, 2012)*

The highest partnership ever recorded against Delhi Capitals came in 2012 when Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli tore apart DC’s bowling attack.

Batting first, RCB lost Tillakaratne Dilshan early, but Gayle and Kohli built a monstrous 204-run partnership, the highest against Delhi and one of the biggest in IPL history.

• Chris Gayle: 128 runs off 62 balls
• Virat Kohli: 73* runs

RCB finished with 215/1, and Delhi had no answer, losing the match convincingly.

#2 – Shikhar Dhawan & Kane Williamson (176 runs, 2018)*

Kane Williamson has been a consistent nightmare for Delhi’s bowlers, and 2018 was no different. Teaming up with Shikhar Dhawan, Williamson built an unbroken 176-run partnership, leading Sunrisers Hyderabad to a dominant 10-wicket win over Delhi.

• Dhawan: 92* runs off 50 balls
• Williamson: 83* runs off 53 balls

Chasing 187, Hyderabad made a mockery of the target, reaching it in just 18.5 overs without losing a wicket.

#3 – Jos Buttler & Devdutt Padikkal (155 runs, 2022)

In IPL 2022, Rajasthan Royals took on Delhi Capitals at Wankhede Stadium, and their batters put on a masterclass.

Rajasthan, batting first, racked up a massive 222/2, with Jos Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal hammering 155 runs for the second wicket.

• Buttler: 116 runs off 65 balls
• Padikkal: 56 runs off 35 balls

Delhi put up a fight but fell 15 runs short of the target. This partnership became one of the highest second-wicket stands in IPL history.

#4 – Manish Pandey & Robin Uthappa (145 runs, 2012)

The 2012 IPL season saw Delhi Daredevils post a big score against Pune Warriors. However, their joy was short-lived as Manish Pandey and Robin Uthappa took charge.

Chasing the target, Pune lost an early wicket at just 2 runs, but Pandey and Uthappa steadied the innings in style. Their unbeaten 145-run partnership took Pune to an easy victory in just 16 overs.

• Manish Pandey: 80 runs
• Robin Uthappa: 60 runs

This stand remains one of the most dominant chases against Delhi in IPL history.

#5 – Shikhar Dhawan & Kane Williamson (136 runs, 2017)

In an IPL 2017 clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils), Sunrisers posted a strong total of 191/4 while batting first in Hyderabad.

Though openers Shikhar Dhawan and David Warner failed to make a big impact, Kane Williamson stepped up with a brilliant 89 off 51 balls. Partnering with Dhawan, who added 70 runs off 50 balls, the duo put on a massive 136-run stand that set the foundation for Hyderabad’s win.

Delhi fought hard in the chase but fell short at 176/5, losing by 15 runs. This partnership remains one of the highest against DC in IPL history.

Conclusion

DC’s bowling attack has often crumbled in the face of sustained aggression from opposition batters. Batting giants like Gayle, Kohli, Buttler etc have compiled multiple 100+ stands against Delhi over the years.  

Williamson too has been a thorn in DC’s flesh, forging big partnerships alongside Dhawan. If the Capitals desire to shed their underachiever tag, they need to find bowlers who can break threatening stands.
