The biggest surprise in World Cup history came during the 2011 edition in a match between Ireland and England in Bengaluru. This upset happened when Ireland chased the highest ever run total in an ODI World Cup game. In the 15th game of the tournament, England batted first after winning the toss.

They scored a large total of 327/8, thanks to good performances from Kevin Pietersen, who made 59 off 50 balls, Jonathan Trott, who scored 92 off 92 balls, and Ian Bell, who made 81 off 86 balls.

Despite being an associate nation, Ireland faced the challenge of chasing this big score. Not many people thought they had a chance. However, the second inning brought a surprising turn of events.

Even though Ireland lost their captain, William Porterfield, on the very first ball of their chase, they managed to reach the target in 49.1 overs, making 329/7. This remarkable victory created history.
