Dawid Malan was a latecomer to the England cricket squad, making his debut in 2017 when he was already 29. His position in the international setup hasn’t always been a certainty, but now there is no disputing his place.

The 36-year-old continues to shine in white-ball cricket and has posted some incredible stats for his country. Along with being the fastest player to ever reach 1,000 runs in the 50 over game, Malan also has the best batting average by some margin at 61.53. The question is, how long can he keep up these incredible performances for England?

Malan is a Key Player for England in Limited Overs

No England fan would dispute Malan’s place in the England ODI setup now, and the player is a key reason why the Three Lions were amongst the favourites going into the World Cup this year.

In the Cricket World Cup odds, Jos Buttler and company were heavily favoured to retain their crown after winning the competition for the first time in 2019. The other nations backed to go all the way were a few of the other usual suspects, including India and South Africa.

It’s incredible to think what Malan could have done with the bat if he’d broken into the England setup at an earlier age. In a short space of time, the clever batsman has registered numerous achievements, and it will be hard for anyone to top his race to 1,000 runs in 21 innings.

With a strike rate of 96.13, it’s clear that Malan’s impact for England has been astounding. The Yorkshire player is top of the all-time T20 batting rankings and has a World Cup win in that format under his belt already.

Player May Only Have a Few Years Left to Shine at Top Level

Unfortunately for Malan and England, it’s highly likely that this will be his last ever World Cup in ODI cricket. He’ll be 40 by the time the next edition of the tournament rolls around, so he’ll need to take his opportunities in the near future.

The T20 World Cup in 2024 could be his last major tournament, and he’ll be looking to go out with a bang in the West Indies and United States competition.

Malan certainly isn’t ready to hang up his cricketing gear just yet and will be keen to make the most of the next few years at the top level. This could involve seeking a new deal with an IPL franchise for the final stages of his career.

He has only played for one IPL team in his career to date, when he spent the 2021 season with Punjab Kings. Malan has been open to various moves over the years, though, with time spent in the Pakistan Super League and the Bangladesh Premier League among other divisions.

Malan has established himself as a critical member of England’s limited overs setup but, unfortunately, his time at the top table is coming to an end. The Three Lions will have to make the most of his skills while they still can.
