Most Sixes in BBL History: Chris Lynn’s 227-Six Record

Chris Lynn has hit more sixes than anyone in Big Bash League history — 227 of them, a record so far ahead of the field that second place trails by 74. The BBL was built on big hitting, and nobody has embodied that identity more than Lynn, whose towering sixes for Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers turned him into the league’s most feared opener for over a decade.

These figures are correct through the end of BBL|15 in January 2026, before the BBL 2026-27 season begins on 12 December 2026. Every six hit in BBL|16 will be added to these totals, so this list is both a record of the league’s first fifteen seasons and the starting point for the next chapter.

Most Sixes in BBL History: Top 5 All-Time Six-Hitters

Rank Batter Teams Sixes Span
1 Chris Lynn Brisbane Heat, Adelaide Strikers 227 2011–2026
2 Glenn Maxwell Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars 153 2011–2026
3 Ben McDermott Brisbane Heat, Melbourne Renegades, Hobart Hurricanes 146 2014–2026
4 Aaron Finch Melbourne Renegades 118 2011–2024
5 Marcus Stoinis Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Stars 117 2012–2026

Chris Lynn: The BBL’s Six-Hitting King

Chris Lynn’s six-hitting record is inseparable from his batting record. He is also the most prolific run-scorer in BBL history with 4,133 runs, and the two records explain each other: Lynn scores quickly because he clears the rope more often than anyone else, and he has done it for longer than anyone else, playing in every BBL season since 2011.

At his peak, in the 2015–16 and 2016–17 seasons, Lynn struck at more than 170, and his sixes became a signature of the league itself — hit flat, hit long, and hit into the second tier. His 227 sixes are 74 clear of second place, which is roughly the equivalent of three full seasons of six-hitting for a good T20 batter. No active player is close to catching him.

The rate tells the same story. Lynn has averaged 1.68 sixes per innings across his 135 BBL innings, comfortably ahead of Maxwell’s 1.26 per innings across 121. In other words, Lynn does not just lead the sixes chart because he has played the longest — he leads it because, innings for innings, nobody in BBL history has cleared the rope more often.

Glenn Maxwell and Ben McDermott: The Chasers

Glenn Maxwell, second with 153 sixes, is the only other batter past 150. His six-hitting is different from Lynn’s: Maxwell hits them everywhere, over cover, over fine leg, and reverse-swept over third man, and his 154 not out against Hobart Hurricanes in 2022 — the highest individual score in BBL history — featured four sixes alongside 22 fours.

Ben McDermott, third with 146 sixes, is the quiet achiever of this list. Across Brisbane Heat, Melbourne Renegades and Hobart Hurricanes, McDermott has built one of the most consistent power-hitting records in the league, and he is only seven sixes behind Maxwell. Both men are active in BBL|16, so second place is genuinely contested.

Aaron Finch and Marcus Stoinis: The Frozen Record and the Chaser

Aaron Finch, fourth with 118 sixes, is the only man in the top five whose total is frozen: the former Australia captain retired from the BBL after the 2023–24 season, having hit all of his sixes for Melbourne Renegades. Marcus Stoinis, fifth with 117 sixes, needs just two more to pass Finch — something he could do in his very first innings of BBL|16.

Stoinis, who began his BBL career with Perth Scorchers before becoming a Melbourne Stars mainstay, is also the record-holder for the most runs in a single BBL season, with 705 in 2019–20. His power game has made him one of the league’s most reliable six-hitters for over a decade.

Most Sixes in a Single BBL Innings

The record for the most sixes in one BBL innings belongs to Josh Brown, who smashed 12 sixes during his 140 off 57 balls for Brisbane Heat against Adelaide Strikers in the BBL|13 Challenger in January 2024 — an innings that also featured the joint-second-fastest century in BBL history, reached in 41 balls.

Three batters share second place with 11 sixes in an innings. Chris Gayle hit 11 for Sydney Thunder against Adelaide Strikers in 2011–12, Craig Simmons hit 11 for Perth Scorchers against Sydney Sixers in 2013–14, and Mitchell Owen hit 11 during his 108 off 42 balls in the BBL|14 final in January 2025, the innings that won Hobart Hurricanes their first title. Steve Smith’s 41-ball century for Sydney Sixers against Sydney Thunder in January 2026 featured nine sixes, four of them in succession in a single over.

The fastest centuries in BBL history list and the most wickets in BBL history chart show the other side of this story: the bowlers who have spent fifteen seasons trying to stop these sixes, and the innings that got away from them.

What BBL|16 Could Change in the Most Sixes Chart

Three things are worth watching when the new season starts on 12 December 2026. First, Chris Lynn will extend a lead that already stands at 74 sixes — 250 BBL sixes is a realistic target for him within the next two seasons. Second, the race for second place between Maxwell (153) and McDermott (146) is separated by just seven sixes and could flip early in the season. Third, Marcus Stoinis needs only two sixes to pass Aaron Finch and move into fourth place.

For Indian fans following the new season, the BBL schedule 2026-27 shows when Lynn, Maxwell and McDermott play next — and how quickly this chart starts moving again.
