Team preview: Lumbini Lions
Lumbini Lions come into Season 3 as the defending champions. They lifted their maiden NPL title in 2025 by beating Sudurpaschim Royals by six wickets in the final, and they will want to start their title defence by beating the same opponents again. Their 2025 campaign was built on balance rather than one star, but the standout performer was Ruben Trumpelmann, who was named player of the series. The big question for Lumbini this season is whether they can handle being the hunted: no team in NPL history has defended the title, and every opponent now plans specifically for them. An opening-day win over Sudurpaschim would be the perfect statement that the champions are not going anywhere.
Team preview: Sudurpaschim Royals
Sudurpaschim Royals are the nearly-men of the Nepal Premier League, and they know it. They lost the 2024 final to Janakpur Bolts and the 2025 final to Lumbini Lions, so Season 3 is their third attempt at the trophy — and it starts against the team that broke their hearts last time. Captain Dipendra Singh Airee leads a settled domestic core of Binod Bhandari, Aarif Sheikh, Ishan Pandey, Abinash Bohara and Hemant Dhami. Their overseas picks are proven NPL performers: Scott Kuggeleijn took 17 wickets in the inaugural season (joint-most in the tournament), Saif Zaib was the best player of the first edition with 275 runs and 12 wickets, and Brandon McMullen, re-signed after the inaugural edition, adds all-round depth. If any team has a point to prove on opening day, it is this one.
