Chinmay Sutar’s historic 400 not out: only the second Ranji quadruple century

The story of the round came from the Plate group at Sovima, where Mizoram’s Chinmay Sutar finished 400 not out against Nagaland — only the second quadruple century in Ranji Trophy history, 78 years after B. B. Nimbalkar’s 443 not out for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948-49. It was the first Ranji quadruple century in 78 years, built over 517 balls with 46 fours and seven sixes, and it instantly became the second-highest individual score the tournament has ever seen, ahead of Prithvi Shaw’s 379.

Standout batting performances of Round 2

  • Ayush Badoni (217) and Priyansh Arya (199), Delhi vs Gujarat: Delhi’s captain smashed his third first-class double century — 217 off 246 balls — and shared a 234-run fourth-wicket stand with Arya, who fell one run short of a double ton. Delhi declared on 648 for 6, enforced the follow-on after Gujarat made 479 (Manan Hingrajia 123), and banked three points from the draw. Arya was named Player of the Match.
  • Sarfaraz Khan (154), Mumbai vs Himachal Pradesh: Sarfaraz was Player of the Match as Mumbai thrashed Himachal Pradesh by an innings and 97 runs for their second straight bonus-point win, keeping them top of Elite Group D.
  • Ruturaj Gaikwad (101*), Maharashtra vs Jharkhand: Gaikwad’s unbeaten hundred — his 10th in first-class cricket — headlined Maharashtra’s 527 for 5 declared, alongside Ankit Bawne’s 169 not out and Digvijay Patil’s 148. Maharashtra took the first-innings lead in the draw.
  • Uday Saharan (161) and Salil Arora (107), Punjab vs Chhattisgarh: Saharan’s big hundred set up Punjab’s 456, and after Ayush Pandey’s 111 for Chhattisgarh, Punjab chased 86 for a seven-wicket win.
  • Mohammed Azharuddeen (139*) and Sachin Baby (112), Kerala vs Odisha: Azharuddeen’s unbeaten 139 carried Kerala to 404 and an innings-and-36-run win; he was named Player of the Match.
  • Ravikumar Samarth (143), Vidarbha vs Jammu & Kashmir: Samarth’s hundred underpinned Vidarbha’s 305, and the defending champions survived a dramatic collapse (81 for 7 in the chase) to beat J&K by three wickets in the round’s most nerve-shredding finish.
  • Rinku Singh (118*), Uttar Pradesh vs Goa: Rinku’s unbeaten hundred helped UP post 202 and 197 before the bowlers sealed a 68-run win.
  • Shikhar Mohan (127), Jharkhand vs Maharashtra: Mohan’s second-innings hundred saved the game for Jharkhand at 344 for 8.
  • Manisankar Murasingh (161), Tripura vs Assam: a fine hundred in defeat as Tripura lost by nine wickets.
