Tilak Varma IPL Career Summary

Season-by-Season IPL Batting Stats

The Maiden Century

Tilak’s finest IPL moment came in 2026 when he scored an unbeaten 101, his first IPL hundred. It was the culmination of four seasons of steady growth, and it confirmed his status as one of the best young batters in the tournament.

Before that, his highest score was the unbeaten 84 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2023, an innings full of clean, fearless stroke play that showed what he was capable of.

The 2024 Season: Breakout Year

The 2024 season was Tilak’s best before his century year, with 416 runs in 13 matches at an average of 41.60 and a strike rate of 149.64. His three half-centuries that season included several match-winning contributions in the middle order.

That campaign established him as Mumbai’s most reliable young batter and a key part of their future plans.

Batting Style and Strengths

Tilak bats left-handed and is known for his elegant stroke play and composure under pressure. He is particularly strong against spin, using his feet well and finding the boundary with classical shots rather than brute force.

His ability to rotate strike and accelerate when needed makes him ideal for the middle overs. He has also shown he can finish games, with a calm temperament that belies his young age.

Rise Through Domestic Cricket

Before the IPL, Tilak made his mark in domestic cricket for Hyderabad. He became the first player to hit three consecutive T20 centuries in domestic cricket, a record that lifted his confidence heading into the IPL.

Mumbai’s scouts identified him early, and their INR 1.70 crore investment in 2022 has turned out to be one of the best-value signings of the mega auction.

Consistency Across Seasons

What sets Tilak apart from most young batters is his remarkable consistency. He has crossed 300 runs in every IPL season of his career: 397 in 2022, 343 in 2023, 416 in 2024, 343 in 2025 and 359 in 2026.

Very few players in IPL history have managed five consecutive 300-run seasons, let alone from the age of 19. That run of form is why Mumbai Indians never hesitated to retain him, and why he is seen as a future leader of the franchise.

Fielding Excellence

Tilak is also an outstanding fielder, often stationed in the deep or inside the circle where his athleticism and safe hands make a difference. He has taken 44 catches in 68 matches, an excellent return for a young player.

His all-round athleticism adds significant value beyond his batting, making him one of the most complete young cricketers in the league.

International Career

Tilak’s IPL performances earned him an India call-up, and he has represented the country in T20 internationals. His smooth transition to international cricket surprised few, given how composed he had looked against world-class bowling in the IPL.

He remains a key part of India’s white-ball plans, and his development continues to be one of the most exciting stories in Indian cricket. Selectors value his temperament in pressure situations, and his ability to bat anywhere from three to five gives the team valuable flexibility.

Learning from Rohit Sharma

Playing alongside Rohit Sharma at Mumbai Indians has been a crucial part of Tilak’s development. Opening partnerships and dressing-room conversations with one of the game’s greats have shaped his understanding of pacing T20 innings.

He has often spoken about how watching senior Mumbai players prepare has accelerated his own growth as a professional.
