For the first 39 years of one-day international cricket, no one reached 200 in an ODI. The format was considered too short, the fields too spread, and the risk too great. Then Tendulkar broke the barrier, and the floodgates opened. Since 2010, double centuries have gone from impossible to rare to a genuine, if still exceptional, feature of the 50-over game. The First: Sachin Tendulkar 200 Not Out (2010)

On 24 February 2010 at Gwalior, Sachin Tendulkar did what generations of batsmen had failed to do. Facing a strong South African attack, he batted through the innings and finished unbeaten on 200 off 147 balls, with 25 fours and 3 sixes. He was 36 years old, in his 21st year of international cricket, and he had just broken a barrier many believed would never fall.

The significance of Tendulkar’s innings went beyond the number. Before 2010, the highest ODI score was 194, and the idea of a double century in 50 overs was treated as a fantasy. Tendulkar’s 200 changed the psychology of the format overnight. Batsmen began to believe 200 was possible, teams began to plan for it, and within two years the record had been broken again. The Highest: Rohit Sharma 264 (2014)

Rohit Sharma’s 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens on 13 November 2014 remains the highest individual score in ODI history, and it is not close. His 33 fours and 9 sixes came off 173 balls, and he finished 27 runs clear of the second-highest score on the list, Martin Guptill’s 237 not out. No other batsman has come within 25 runs of Rohit’s mark.

What makes the 264 extraordinary is that Rohit was dropped early in his innings and had been struggling for form. He built his innings in phases: a watchful start, acceleration through the middle overs, and a devastating final assault. By the end, he had scored the most runs any batsman has ever made in a single ODI innings, and he had done it in a match India won by 153 runs. It is the defining innings of his career and the standard against which every ODI double century is measured.

Rohit’s three double centuries are a record in themselves. His first, 209 against Australia at Bengaluru in 2013, featured 16 sixes, then a joint record for sixes in an ODI innings. His third, 208 not out against Sri Lanka at Mohali in 2017, came while he was captaining India and included 12 sixes. No other batsman has more than one ODI double century except Shubman Gill, who joined the multiple-double club in 2026.

The Chase: Glenn Maxwell 201 Not Out (2023)

Glenn Maxwell’s 201 not out against Afghanistan at Mumbai on 7 November 2023 is the most remarkable double century ever scored, because of the circumstances. Australia had collapsed to 91 for 7 chasing 292. Maxwell, batting at number six, was suffering from severe cramp and could barely move between the wickets. He then played one of the greatest innings in cricket history.

Maxwell finished unbeaten on 201 off 128 balls with 21 fours and 10 sixes, adding 202 runs for the eighth wicket with Pat Cummins, who scored just 12 not out. It was the first double century by a non-opener in ODI history, the first double century scored in a run chase, the first by an Australian, and the first in a World Cup. It is also the only double century on this list made by a batsman who came in after the top order had failed, which is why it is so often ranked as the greatest ODI innings ever played. The Fastest: Ishan Kishan 210 (2022)

Ishan Kishan holds the record for the fastest ODI double century, reaching 200 in just 126 balls against Bangladesh at Chattogram on 10 December 2022. He finished with 210 off 131 balls, including 24 fours and 10 sixes, and he was 24 years old at the time. His innings turned a match India had been struggling in into a comfortable 227-run win.

Pathum Nissanka’s 210 not out against Afghanistan at Pallekele in 2024 is the second-fastest, reached in 136 balls. Nissanka became the first Sri Lankan to score an ODI double century, and his innings helped Sri Lanka post 381 for 3. Sehwag’s 219 against West Indies in 2011, reached in 140 balls, completes the top three for speed among the pre-2023 doubles.

The Youngest: Shubman Gill’s Two Doubles

Shubman Gill scored his first ODI double century against New Zealand at Hyderabad in January 2023, making 208 off 149 balls at the age of 23. At the time, he was the youngest batsman ever to score an ODI double century. His innings included 19 fours and 9 sixes and rescued India from a difficult position after early wickets.

Gill’s second double century, 223 not out against West Indies at Guwahati in September 2026, was even better. It came off just 133 balls, included 26 fours and 8 sixes, and powered India to their highest successful run chase in ODI history, chasing down 406. It also set a new record for the highest individual score in a run chase, passing Maxwell’s 201 not out. Gill, still only 27, is now the second batsman after Rohit Sharma with multiple ODI double centuries, and the most likely candidate to challenge Rohit’s record of three.

India’s dominance of the list is striking: eight of the thirteen double centuries have been scored by Indian batsmen. That reflects a generation of Indian openers, from Tendulkar and Sehwag through Rohit, Kishan, and Gill, who have combined technical excellence with the power game that modern ODI batting demands. It also reflects the batting-friendly conditions and short boundaries at many Indian venues, where eight of the thirteen doubles have been scored.

The other doubles are spread across the cricketing world. Fakhar Zaman’s 210 not out in 2018 made him Pakistan’s first double centurion, in a match where Pakistan posted 399 for 1. Why ODI Double Centuries Are Still Rare

Thirteen double centuries in more than 4,700 men’s ODIs tells you how hard the feat remains. A batsman needs to bat for most of the innings, survive the new ball, accelerate through the middle overs, and still have the energy and wickets in hand to attack at the death. He also needs his team to be in a position where a long innings is the right play, rather than a quick cameo.

The conditions have changed, though. Better bats, shorter boundaries, two new balls, and the influence of T20 cricket have all pushed scores higher. The gap between doubles has shrunk: after a six-year wait between Tendulkar and the next, the format has now produced doubles in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2026. Whether the next barrier, a triple century in an ODI, ever falls is one of cricket’s great open questions. Rohit’s 264 remains 36 runs short of it, and no one has yet come closer.
