The Rajasthan Royals had a rollercoaster season in IPL 2024. They started strong, winning seven of their first eight matches and looking unbeatable. But the second half of their campaign took a turn for the worse, as they lost four consecutive games.

Despite their early success, they barely made it to the knockouts and then faced a tough challenge in the second qualifier against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Unfortunately, they couldn’t overcome SRH and had to bow out of the tournament, finishing in third place. Sunrisers Hyderabad went on to play Kolkata Knight Riders in the final, with KKR ultimately lifting their third IPL title.

The Rajasthan Royals have been a consistent team in recent years. They reached the final in 2022, finished fifth in 2023, and secured third place in 2024. This consistency is largely due to the leadership of Sanju Samson as captain and Kumar Sangakkara as head coach. Together, they have focused on maintaining the core of the squad over the last three seasons. However, with the IPL governing council expected to make changes to the retention rules, the Royals, like other franchises, are already strategizing about which players to retain.

The number of retentions allowed has sparked intense debate, with some franchises, like SRH and KKR, opposing changes that could disrupt the core teams have built over time. As the 2025 IPL mega auction approaches, the Royals may need to make some tough decisions, especially when it comes to their overseas players.

One player who might be released is Donovan Ferreira, the South African wicketkeeper-batsman. Ferreira played only two games for the Royals last season and spent most of the time on the bench, as the team preferred a consistent group of overseas players. Another potential release is Tom Kohler-Cadmore, the English batsman who also struggled to secure a regular spot in the team. He played a few games towards the end of the season when Jos Buttler was recalled by England for the T20I series against Pakistan. However, Kohler-Cadmore couldn’t make a significant impact and missed out on England’s T20 World Cup squad as well.

Finally, the Royals might have to choose between Nandre Burger and Rovman Powell. Burger had a decent run, picking up seven wickets in six games, showing promise as a bowler. Powell, the T20I captain of the West Indies, is known for his powerful hitting but hasn’t consistently delivered for the Royals. Depending on the team’s balance, one of these two might be released ahead of the mega auction.
