Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers hold the record for the highest partnership stand in the history of the IPL. Both Kohli and AB also hold the record for the 2nd highest partnership in IPL history.
1. Highest partnerships in IPL: Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers – 229 Runs
Highest partnership in IPL history: Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers are two of the greatest batsmen of all time, and their friendship has extended to the cricket field. The duo holds the record for the top two partnerships in IPL history, with their 229-run stand for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Gujarat Lions in 2016 being the highest.
In match 44 of IPL 2016, RCB lost Chris Gayle early, but Kohli and de Villiers came together for the second wicket and obliterated the Gujarat bowlers. They forged a stand of 229 runs in just 96 balls, which was the highest stand for any wicket in T20 cricket at the time.
Kohli finished on 109 off 55 balls, while de Villiers finished on 129* off 52 balls. RCB racked up a towering 248/3 in their 20 overs, and Gujarat never had a chance.
2. Second Highest partnership in IPL: Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers – 215* Runs
Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, set the record for the second-highest partnership in IPL history with 215 runs on May 10, 2015, at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, against the Mumbai Indians. This partnership happened for the second wicket.
The highest opening partnership in IPL history is 210 runs, achieved by Quinton de Kock & KL Rahul for the LSG against the KKR on 18 May 2022, in Mumbai, which broke the opening partnership record of Jonny Bairstow and David Warner record of 185 runs.
Kohli scored an unbeaten 82 off 50 balls, including six fours and four sixes, at a strike rate of 164.00. De Villiers scored an unbeaten 133 off 59 balls, including 19 fours and four sixes, at a strike rate of 225.42. The Royal Challengers Bangalore won the match by 39 runs.
3. Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul – 210Â Runs*
On May 18, 2022, Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul, the opening batters for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), etched their names in the IPL record books with a historic 210-run unbroken opening partnership against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
4. Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan – 210 Runs
Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan of Gujarat Titans rewrote the record books with their incredible opening partnership of 210 runs against Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2024 match on May 10th.
5. Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh – 206 Runs
Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh, playing for Kings XI Punjab, set the record for the third-highest partnership in IPL history with 206 runs on May 17, 2011, against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Dharamsala.
The highest partnership in the IPL is 215 runs, achieved by Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers for the Royal Challengers Bangalore against the Mumbai Indians on May 10, 2015, at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Gilchrist and Marsh came together in the fourth over and punished the RCB bowling attack, scoring at a rapid pace. Gilchrist was eventually dismissed for 106 runs off 55 balls, but Marsh remained unbeaten on 79 runs off 49 balls.
Thanks to the efforts of Gilchrist and Marsh, Kings XI Punjab posted a mammoth total of 267/5 in their 20 overs. RCB collapsed in the chase, falling short by 111 runs thanks to Piyush Chawla’s four-wicket haul.
6. Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli – 204*
Virat Kohli Features Thrice in List of Top 5 Highest IPL Partnerships:In 2012, Kohli and Chris Gayle formed a devastating partnership for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Delhi Capitals.
The duo hammered the Delhi bowling attack, scoring 204 runs for the second wicket in just 110 balls. Gayle blazed his way to 128* off 62 balls, while Kohli was equally effective with a 53-ball 73.
Thanks to the Kohli-Gayle partnership, RCB posted a towering 215/1 in their 20 overs. Delhi was restricted to 194/9 in reply, and RCB won the match comfortably.
7. David Warner and Naman Ojha – 189*
David Warner and Naman Ojha, playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, set the record for the highest unbroken partnership in IPL history with 189 runs on May 23, 2012, against Delhi Daredevils, discussing the 5 highest partnerships in the Indian Premier League.
Warner and Ojha came together after Delhi had dismissed Virender Sehwag early in the chase. Warner began to attack the Delhi bowling from the outset, while Ojha provided solid support from the other end.
In the 17th over, Warner reached his century, and Sunrisers Hyderabad secured their victory with three overs to spare. Warner finished on 109* off 54 balls, while Ojha finished on 64* off 45 balls.
