Highest Team Totals in BBL History: Stars’ 273/2 Leads the Chart
Melbourne Stars’ 273/2 against Hobart Hurricanes is the highest team total in Big Bash League history — a night when Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 154 powered the biggest score the league has ever seen. Behind it, the list of the highest BBL totals reads like a history of the league’s most explosive batting: a record chase at the Gabba, a 250-plus blitz in Adelaide, and a Perth total so big that it still ended in defeat.
These figures are correct through the end of BBL|15 in January 2026, before the BBL 2026-27 season begins on 12 December 2026. In fifteen BBL seasons, only five team totals have passed 230 — and the top of the list has changed twice in the last two seasons alone.

Melbourne Stars 273/2: The Night Maxwell Made History
On 19 January 2022 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne Stars posted 273/2 against Hobart Hurricanes — still the highest team total in BBL history. The innings was built around Glenn Maxwell’s unbeaten 154 off 64 balls, the highest individual score in BBL history, with Marcus Stoinis playing the supporting role at the other end. The Hurricanes were beaten by 106 runs, and the total has survived four seasons since.
What makes 273/2 remarkable is that it was not a small-ground fluke: the MCG is one of the biggest grounds in world cricket. Maxwell simply hit the ball into areas where no fielder could reach it, and the Stars’ total remains the benchmark every big-hitting team in the BBL is measured against.
Brisbane Heat 258/2: The Record Chase at the Gabba
The second-highest total in BBL history is also the highest successful run chase the league has ever seen. On 19 December 2025 at the Gabba, Brisbane Heat chased down Perth Scorchers’ 257/6 with a ball to spare, finishing on 258/2 — and in doing so, they produced the only match in BBL history in which two totals above 250 were scored.
The chase was built on a record partnership: Jack Wildermuth (110* off 54 balls) and Matt Renshaw (102 off 51 balls) shared 212 runs for the second wicket, the highest partnership in BBL history, and the only time two centuries have been scored in the same BBL innings. The Scorchers, who had posted 257/6 themselves, became the first team in BBL history to lose a match after scoring more than 250 — the cruellest entry on this list.
Adelaide Strikers 251/5 and Perth Scorchers 232/4
Adelaide Strikers’ 251/5 against Brisbane Heat in the 2024–25 season is the fourth-highest total in BBL history, built around Matthew Short’s 109 off 54 balls. It was a statement innings from the Strikers at Adelaide Oval, and it came against the same Heat side that would feature in both 250-plus matches the following season.
Perth Scorchers’ 232/4 against Adelaide Strikers in 2025–26 completes the top five. That the Scorchers appear twice in the top five — and the Strikers and Heat keep appearing as both scorers and victims — tells you which teams have driven the BBL’s scoring explosion: the same handful of batting-heavy sides, meeting each other on flat pitches, year after year.
Lowest Team Totals in BBL History
The other end of the list is just as famous. The lowest total in BBL history is Sydney Thunder’s 15 all out against Adelaide Strikers in December 2022 — bowled out in just 5.5 overs, a record that will surely never be beaten. Behind it sit Melbourne Renegades’ 57 against Melbourne Stars in 2014–15, Renegades’ 60 against Sydney Sixers in 2020–21, Melbourne Stars’ 61 against Sydney Sixers in 2021–22, and Sydney Thunder’s 62 against Sydney Sixers in 2022–23.
The gap between the highest and lowest totals — 273/2 and 15 all out — is 258 runs, which is itself a measure of how wildly a T20 match can swing. The bowlers who produced those collapses belong on the most wickets in BBL history chart, led by Sean Abbott with 186 wickets.
Highest Successful Run Chases and Biggest Winning Margins
Beyond the top five totals, the chase records deserve their own mention. After Brisbane Heat’s 258/2, the next-highest successful chases are Adelaide Strikers’ 230/3 against Hobart Hurricanes in 2022–23, Hobart Hurricanes’ 223/8 against Melbourne Renegades in 2016–17, Melbourne Stars’ 211/3 against Adelaide Strikers in 2023–24, and Hobart Hurricanes’ 210/7 against Brisbane Heat in 2013–14.
The largest winning margin in BBL history, by runs, is Sydney Sixers’ 152-run win over Melbourne Stars on 5 December 2021. The largest margin by balls remaining is Melbourne Stars’ win over Adelaide Strikers on 9 January 2014, completed with 75 balls to spare. And the lowest total ever successfully defended is Perth Scorchers’ 117/7 against Melbourne Renegades on 26 December 2013 — proof that even a modest total can be enough on the right night.
For Indian fans following the new season, the BBL schedule 2026-27 shows when these teams meet next — and the most runs in BBL history, most sixes in BBL history and fastest centuries in BBL history charts show the batters most likely to push these totals even higher.
Can Anyone Pass 273/2 in BBL|16?
The highest total has risen twice in two seasons — from 251/5 to 257/6 to 258/2 as a chase — which suggests 273/2 is under genuine threat. The Gabba, where the record chase happened, and the small boundaries at Bellerive Oval in Hobart are the likeliest venues. And with the new season’s first match outside Australia being played in Chennai, an unfamiliar venue could produce a surprise: new grounds often produce extreme totals in both directions.
If 273/2 falls in BBL|16, it will almost certainly fall to a team with two batters firing at once — because, as the Gabba record showed, even 257 is no longer a safe score.
