Chennai won the toss in the high-stakes 2011 IPL final match, and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni confidently chose to bat first. Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay provided a blazing start, reaching the 50-run mark in just six overs, and went on to establish a record first-wicket partnership.
The duo added an impressive 159 runs during their partnership at the crease, spanning 14.5 overs. While Hussey played a more anchoring role, he still managed to score 63 runs off 45 balls, including three fours and three sixes.
However, it was Vijay’s aggressive batting that truly dismantled Bangalore’s hopes. He struck a remarkable 95 runs off just 52 balls, smashing four fours and six sixes.
Vijay was dismissed in the 19th over, seemingly hampered by cramps and exhaustion, which prevented him from completing a flawless century. Dhoni, who had promoted himself to the number three position, quickly accumulated 29 runs with Vijay, taking most of the strike himself.
Bravo delivered a blistering 22 runs off just 13 balls, including two sixes, in the CSK final 2011. With about ten balls remaining, the subsequent batsmen attempted to hit aggressively, but Chris Gayle took two wickets in the final over, raising concerns that Chennai might fall short of 200. However, Dwayne Bravo came in and smashed the last ball for a six, bringing their total to 205 for five.
The run chase hinged on Gayle’s performance. Unfortunately, he was dismissed for a three-ball duck after Ravichandran Ashwin had him caught behind the wicket.
Mayank Agarwal was dismissed for ten runs, and by the third over, Bangalore was already struggling at 16 for two wickets. Any remaining hope rested on Virat Kohli, who fought valiantly in a losing cause, scoring 35 runs off 32 balls.
However, the innings’ top score belonged to Saurabh Tiwary, who came in later in the order and managed 42 runs. This dismal performance reflected Bangalore’s struggles on the day. Ashwin’s outstanding bowling figures of three for 16 in four overs and Shadab Jakati’s two for 21 were instrumental in Chennai’s victory.
