Mumbai eventually won the championship, completing back-to-back IPL titles. Their own historical record identifies Ishan as their leading run-scorer that season with 516 runs.

Many IPL teams have possessed a stronger individual top three, but very few have matched the balance of MI’s 2020 lineup from opener to finisher.

2. Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 2016

If this ranking focused purely on superstar batting talent, RCB’s 2016 lineup could easily sit at No. 1.

Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers formed perhaps the most intimidating top-order trio ever assembled by an IPL franchise. KL Rahul added quality and flexibility, while Shane Watson gave RCB another powerful option.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders – 2024

Kolkata Knight Riders built one of the most aggressive and balanced batting lineups of the modern IPL in 2024.

4. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 2024

If KKR were aggressive, Sunrisers Hyderabad sometimes appeared determined to redefine what an IPL total could look like.

Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma formed one of the most destructive opening combinations in league history.

Head scored 567 runs at a strike rate of 191.55. Abhishek made 484 while striking at an astonishing 204.22. Heinrich Klaasen followed with 479 runs at 171.07.

The lineup therefore contained three players capable of maintaining a strike rate far above the traditional T20 benchmark.

Their aggression produced historic totals.

SRH scored 277 against Mumbai Indians and then broke their own IPL record by making 287/3 against RCB in Bengaluru. The official IPL match report specifically noted that Hyderabad broke the tournament’s highest-total record twice during the same season.

5. Kings XI Punjab – 2014
