Jos Buttler IPL Records and Milestones
Buttler’s name appears all over the IPL record books. His seven centuries are among the most by any overseas batter in the tournament, and his 2022 tally of four hundreds in a single season equalled the record for most centuries in one edition.
His unbeaten 107 against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, scored in a successful chase of 224, is widely rated as one of the greatest run-chases anchored by a single batter in IPL history. A few weeks later he struck 100 not out against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, once again finishing a steep chase unbeaten.
In 2025, after moving to Gujarat Titans, Buttler produced one of the most consistent seasons of his career, scoring 538 runs in 14 matches at an average of 59.78 and a strike rate of 163.03. He was the Titans’ most reliable top-order batter and a key reason they reached the playoffs. He missed the Eliminator against Mumbai Indians after leaving for England’s ODI series against West Indies, with Kusal Mendis replacing him in the squad.
Across his career he has hit 407 fours and 185 sixes, and he stands among the top overseas run-scorers in IPL history, a list dominated by players who changed how T20 batting is played.
Jos Buttler Playing Style and Role
Buttler usually opens the batting and keeps wicket, giving his team the rare combination of an explosive starter and a safe pair of hands behind the stumps. He is equally strong against pace and spin, and his ability to hit straight down the ground makes him hard to contain once set.
His switch-hit and ramp shots have become signature strokes, but his real strength is orthodox power: a high backlift, fast hands and the ability to clear long boundaries without losing shape. Captains value him because he can bat through the powerplay and still accelerate at the death, which is why both Rajasthan and Gujarat built their top orders around him.
Jos Buttler Memorable IPL Innings
Some knocks define a career, and Buttler has several.
His maiden IPL century, 124 off 64 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2021, announced him as a genuine hundred-maker in the league. The 2022 season then brought a flood: 100 against Mumbai Indians, 116 against Delhi Capitals, 103 not out against Kolkata Knight Riders and 106 not out against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 2, the last of which carried Rajasthan into the final.
The 107 not out against Kolkata in 2024 might top them all. Chasing 224, Buttler battled cramp in the Jaipur heat and still finished the job with a six, an innings his captain called one of the finest he had seen. It remains one of the great campaigns for most runs in IPL chases in a single season, and a reminder of what he does under pressure.
Jos Buttler IPL Price and Auction History
Buttler’s auction value has risen steeply through his career. Mumbai Indians bought him for INR 3.8 crore in the 2016 auction. Rajasthan Royals picked him up for INR 4.4 crore in 2018 and retained him ahead of the 2022 season for INR 10 crore, a clear signal of how central he had become to their plans.
Released before the 2025 mega auction, he became one of the most wanted names in the room. Rajasthan tried to buy him back, but Gujarat Titans outbid them to secure his services for INR 15.75 crore, making him one of the costliest overseas signings of that auction.
