Australian batsman Shaun Marsh was the first-ever recipient of the Orange Cap, scoring 616 runs in the 2008 season. Sachin Tendulkar became the first Indian player to win the award in 2010, scoring 618 runs.

In 2023, Shubman Gill of Gujarat Titans clinched the Orange Cap with 890 runs in 17 innings, including three centuries and four fifties, with a highest score of 129.
The following year, 2024, saw Virat Kohli of Royal Challengers Bengaluru securing the Orange Cap by amassing 741 runs in 15 innings, featuring one century and five fifties, with a top score of 113*.
