Ranji Trophy Points Table: Standings and Points System

A Ranji Trophy points table records more than wins and defeats. An outright victory earns six points, an innings or ten-wicket win earns seven, and a drawn match can produce a three-to-one points split through the first-innings result. Those differences often decide qualification between teams with similar win records.

The 2026–27 competition begins on 11 October. Before that opening round, every side starts without completed matches or earned points. Results from the previous campaign can explain how the system works, but they are not the new season's standings.

How Points Are Awarded

Match result Points awarded
Outright win 6 to the winner
Innings or ten-wicket win 7 to the winner, including a bonus point
Outright defeat 0
Draw with a first-innings lead 3
Draw with a first-innings deficit 1
Tie after both innings 3 each
Tied first innings in a drawn match 1 each
No first-innings decision 1 each
Abandoned without a ball bowled 1 each

These established allocations explain why the word “draw” is insufficient on its own. A side that dominates the first innings can take a qualification advantage even when it cannot finish the match outright.

A first-innings lead does not provide three extra points on top of an outright win. Once a team wins the match, the outright result determines its points. The lead becomes the deciding league-points factor when the match ends without that result.

A Real Example: Three Teams Finished on 31 Points

The completed 2025–26 Elite Group A table provides a useful illustration. Jharkhand, Andhra and Vidarbha all finished with four wins and 31 points, but only two could qualify.

Final position Team Played Won Bonus points Points
1 Jharkhand 7 4 3 31
2 Andhra 7 4 2 31
3 Vidarbha 7 4 1 31

The bonus-point column separated them before quotient became relevant. Andhra actually had a higher quotient than Jharkhand in the published table, yet Jharkhand finished above Andhra because the earlier tie-break took priority.

For a supporter following the last round, that distinction is critical. Looking only at total points and then choosing the best-looking scoring ratio can give the wrong qualification outcome.

What the Table Abbreviations Mean

“P” means played, “W” won, “L” lost and “Pts” total points. A simple draw column may be expanded into separate categories for a first-innings lead, deficit or tie. “BP” records bonus points, while “Quot” refers to quotient.

Quotient compares a team's runs per wicket scored with its runs per wicket conceded. It is not the same as the net run rate familiar from the IPL. Overs are central to net run rate; wickets are central to this quotient calculation.

For example, a team scoring 1,000 runs for 20 wickets has a runs-per-wicket figure of 50. If it concedes 800 for 20, the opposition figure is 40. Dividing 50 by 40 gives a quotient of 1.25. This is an illustrative calculation, not a reported team's season record.

Why First-Innings Leads Matter

Consider a drawn match in which Team A makes 400 and dismisses Team B for 350. If neither side forces an outright result, Team A takes three points and Team B one. The 50-run advantage has therefore changed the standings even though the match result is recorded as a draw.

Now consider Team A reaching 330 for eight in reply to 350. Another 21 runs would move it beyond the opposition's score. At that moment, a ninth-wicket partnership can influence qualification as directly as a top-order century.

This is why Ranji captains may value lower-order batting, protect a set batter near the first-innings target and delay a declaration while an important lead remains unsecured. The match situation determines whether that caution is sensible.

Winning Outright Changes the Equation

Three points can be valuable, but six provides a much larger return. An unbeaten team collecting first-innings leads in draws can still be overtaken by a side winning outright.

For illustration, three draws with first-innings leads produce nine points. Two ordinary victories produce twelve. The unbeaten record sounds impressive, but the wins have delivered more in fewer games.

The bonus point adds another incentive. An innings victory shows that the winning side needed to bat only once; a ten-wicket victory preserves every wicket in the chase. Both attract the additional point under the established system, and the previous Group A example demonstrates how those points can become decisive.

Elite and Plate Qualification

The 2026–27 Elite field has four groups of eight, with the top two in each qualifying for the quarter-finals. The six Plate teams have a separate table and a final between the top two.

A combined ranking of all 38 sides would hide those different routes. A Plate team's points should not be used to move it into an Elite quarter-final position. Likewise, Elite qualification is decided within the relevant group, not by choosing the eight largest totals across the entire division.

The BCCI's published ranking framework refers to points, bonus points, wins, applicable head-to-head results and quotient. An official table should settle any unusual tie rather than a calculation that omits one of those conditions.

The First-Innings Lead Is Not Added to a Win

If a side leads after the first innings and later wins outright, it receives the points for the outright result. It does not add a separate three-point draw reward to the six-point win. The final match outcome determines the applicable category, which prevents the same performance being counted twice.

FAQs

How many points does a Ranji Trophy win earn?

Six, rising to seven for an innings or ten-wicket victory.

Does a first-innings lead guarantee three points?

It normally determines the three-point allocation when the match is drawn. An outright result takes precedence.

Can teams finish level on points and wins?

Yes. Bonus points and the applicable remaining tie-breaks then matter.

Does Ranji use IPL-style net run rate?

The published multi-day ranking uses quotient rather than NRR.

Are the new season's standings available before the opener?

There are no earned match points before play begins. Previous-season results must retain their own season label.
