Ranji Trophy Schedule: Dates, Fixtures and Knockouts
The Ranji Trophy 2026–27 season begins on 11 October 2026, with the Elite championship scheduled to finish on 3 March 2027. Its league stage runs in two phases: four rounds in October and early November, followed by three rounds from January. The Plate competition starts on the same day but finishes with a separate final on 24–28 January.
Jammu & Kashmir begin their title defence after beating Karnataka on first-innings lead in the previous final. Their championship does not provide a shortcut into the knockouts. Like every other Elite side, they must finish in the top two of an eight-team group before negotiating the quarter-finals and semi-finals.
Ranji Trophy Season Dates
| Competition | Stage | Dates |
|---|---|---|
| Elite | First league phase | 11 October–5 November 2026 |
| Elite | Second league phase | 17 January–4 February 2027 |
| Elite | Knockouts | 9 February–3 March 2027 |
| Plate | First league phase | 11 October–5 November 2026 |
| Plate | Second league phase | 17–20 January 2027 |
| Plate | Final | 24–28 January 2027 |
The season windows establish when the competition takes place. Individual match listings identify the ground and start time. A team's home fixture should not automatically be assigned to its best-known international stadium, because associations can use more than one venue.
All Seven Elite League Rounds
Each Elite team plays the other seven members of its group once. The resulting programme gives teams four matches before the white-ball break and three after it.
| Round | Scheduled match window |
|---|---|
| 1 | 11–14 October 2026 |
| 2 | 18–21 October 2026 |
| 3 | 26–29 October 2026 |
| 4 | 2–5 November 2026 |
| 5 | 17–20 January 2027 |
| 6 | 24–27 January 2027 |
| 7 | 1–4 February 2027 |
Round three starts on 26 October. The last league round begins on 1 February and continues until 4 February; a fixture page displaying only its starting date can make the league appear to finish early.
The intervals leave limited time for travel and recovery when a match lasts four days. For seamers, repeated long spells can influence workload decisions. For batters, moving between grounds brings a new assessment of pace, bounce and the lengths they can safely attack.
Opening-Round Fixtures
All 16 Elite opening matches are scheduled for 11–14 October.
| Group | Fixtures |
|---|---|
| A | Goa–Baroda; Vidarbha–Puducherry; Jammu & Kashmir–Madhya Pradesh; Bihar–Uttar Pradesh |
| B | Saurashtra–Chhattisgarh; Punjab–Assam; Andhra–Karnataka; Hyderabad–Tripura |
| C | Services–Maharashtra; Bengal–Delhi; Gujarat–Odisha; Jharkhand–Kerala |
| D | Mumbai–Chandigarh; Rajasthan–Tamil Nadu; Railways–Uttarakhand; Haryana–Himachal Pradesh |
Mumbai's match against Chandigarh is listed at Wankhede Stadium. An opening-round win cannot secure qualification, but it can change how urgently a captain needs to pursue results later. With only two places available per group, a sequence of draws can leave a team dependent on other results even if it remains unbeaten.
Elite and Plate Groups
| Group | Teams |
|---|---|
| Elite A | Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Baroda, Uttar Pradesh, Puducherry, Goa, Bihar |
| Elite B | Karnataka, Andhra, Saurashtra, Chhattisgarh, Hyderabad, Tripura, Punjab, Assam |
| Elite C | Bengal, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Services, Gujarat, Kerala, Delhi, Odisha |
| Elite D | Uttarakhand, Mumbai, Haryana, Railways, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh |
| Plate | Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh |
The Plate teams play five league fixtures each. Their top two contest the Plate final rather than joining the Elite quarter-finals. This distinction matters when reading a tournament calendar containing both divisions: a January Plate final does not mean the main championship has ended.
Why Ranji Cricket Pauses in November
The interval accommodates the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. Their announced Elite windows run from 14 November to 6 December and from 14 December to 8 January respectively. Ranji resumes on 17 January.
Players selected across formats may therefore remain busy throughout the break. T20 cricket rewards rapid scoring and short spells; the return to multi-day cricket demands patience, longer bowling workloads and the ability to restart an innings after session breaks.
A team's November points remain in place, but its January playing XI may look different because of form, fitness and other selections. The split gives the qualification race a second beginning without resetting the table.
Quarter-Finals and the Route to the Final
The top two in each Elite group progress. The bracket pairs A1 with C2, B1 with D2, C1 with A2, and D1 with B2. The winners of the first and fourth quarter-finals meet in one semi-final; the other joins the winners of the second and third.
Quarter-finals begin on 9 February. The announced knockout window ends on 3 March. The eventual finalists and ground must be confirmed through the individual fixture announcement rather than inferred from the season calendar.
The format produces 112 Elite league matches and seven knockout fixtures, making 119 Elite games. Plate adds 15 league matches and a final. Together, the announced structure contains 135 fixtures. These are domestic first-class matches, even where a score service uses “Tests” as a generic label for its multi-day listings.
Match Start Times
Mumbai–Chandigarh is listed at 04:00 UTC, equivalent to 9:30 am in India and 9:00 am in Pakistan. Other fixtures should be checked individually. Rain, poor light and ground conditions can delay the actual start, while overseas viewers must account for their own time zone.
Planning Around the Split Season
A fixture list is most useful when it distinguishes a team's next match from its complete campaign. After the November phase, the same Ranji season resumes in January; the break does not create a new championship or reset the points already earned.
For spectators travelling to a ground, the final check should be the specific match listing and the host association's admission arrangements. A scheduled four-day match can finish early, so a ticket or travel plan for the last day does not guarantee that play will still be taking place. Follow the match situation as well as the original date range.
