Ranji Trophy Records: Major Batting, Bowling and Team Milestones
Wasim Jaffer's 12,038 runs, Rajinder Goel's 637 wickets and B. B. Nimbalkar's unbeaten 443 are three of the central records in Ranji Trophy history. They measure different forms of excellence: a long batting career, sustained wicket-taking and one extraordinary innings.
The tournament's record book also contains newer landmarks. Goa's unbeaten 606-run partnership in 2024–25 surpassed Maharashtra’s 594-run stand from 2016–17, while Harsh Dubey took the single-season wickets benchmark to 69 in the same campaign.

| Individual score | 443* | B. B. Nimbalkar | Maharashtra v Kathiawar, 1948–49 |
| Team innings | 944/6 declared | Hyderabad | v Andhra, 1993–94 |
| Lowest team innings | 21 | Hyderabad | v Rajasthan, 2010–11 |
| Match bowling | 16/99 | Anil Kumble | Karnataka v Kerala, 1994–95 |

An asterisk means the batter or partnership was unbeaten. A declared total is an innings closed by the batting captain before all ten wickets fall.
Why the Statistical Scope Matters
Ranji Trophy totals exclude Tests, the Duleep Trophy, the Irani Cup and other first-class competitions. Jaffer's overall first-class run tally is therefore larger than his Ranji total. Goel's 750 first-class wickets likewise should not replace his 637 in a Ranji-only table.
Season comparisons require another distinction. Plate performances belong in an overall Ranji record book, but an Elite-only table must say so. Differences in opposition and qualification routes provide context without erasing a recognised record.
Exploring the Records
Career leaderboards explain longevity. Innings and match records explain peak performances. Single-season records sit between the two, showing whether a player repeatedly influenced games across one campaign. Reading all three together gives a fuller picture than ranking players on one number alone.
Batting Records: Four Questions With Different Answers
The highest score belongs to B. B. Nimbalkar, who made 443 not out for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948–49. That is an innings record: runs made during one visit to the crease. It does not describe the combined runs a player might score across both innings of a match.
V. V. S. Laxman's 1,415 runs for Hyderabad in 1999–2000 answer the season question. His eight centuries and highest score of 353 show how one large innings can sit inside a much broader run of form. Jaffer's career total answers a third question, covering his complete Ranji journey rather than one campaign.
Speed produces another category. Tanmay Agarwal reached a triple-century in 147 balls for Hyderabad against Arunachal Pradesh in 2023–24. His final score was 366. The 147-ball figure belongs to the moment he reached 300, not the number of deliveries used for his entire innings. Mixing those two numbers would produce a misleading strike rate.
Bowling Records: An Innings Is Not a Match
A bowler can take a maximum of ten wickets in a normal innings, because only ten batters can be dismissed. Premangsu Chatterjee's 10/20 for Bengal against Assam in 1956–57 therefore represents both a complete sweep and an exceptionally low run cost. Pradeep Sunderam and Anshul Kamboj also took all ten in a Ranji innings, although their runs conceded differed.
A match record combines the bowler's returns from the opposition's two innings. Kumble's 16/99 for Karnataka against Kerala in 1994–95 belongs here. Sixteen wickets cannot be compared directly with Chatterjee's ten without explaining that the opportunities are different.
Dubey's 69 wickets belong to a third timescale. They accumulated across Vidarbha's 2024–25 campaign, culminating in the final against Kerala. His season ended with a championship as well as an individual record, connecting a statistical achievement to the team's objective.
Team Records Can Point in Opposite Directions
Hyderabad appear at both ends of the team totals list. Their 944/6 declared against Andhra in January 1994 remains the highest Ranji innings. Against Rajasthan in 2010–11, however, Hyderabad were dismissed for 21. The same association can produce both records because the matches involve different generations, opponents and conditions.
Run-chase records need another distinction. Railways finished on 378/5 against Tripura in February 2024, completing a target of 378. That figure describes a successful fourth-innings chase. A side scoring more in the fourth innings while losing or drawing has not broken the successful-chase record.
Partnerships: Record the Wicket and the Result
Kashyap Bakhle and Snehal Kauthankar added an unbeaten 606 for Goa's third wicket against Arunachal Pradesh in 2024–25. Bakhle finished on 300 not out and Kauthankar on 314 not out. Goa declared at 727/2, so the partnership ended through the declaration rather than a dismissal.
The stand surpassed the unbeaten 594 added by Maharashtra's Swapnil Gugale and Ankit Bawne against Delhi in 2016–17. Naming the previous record explains the actual progression; describing it vaguely as an ancient benchmark would obscure that relatively recent history.
Which Records Belong in a Quick Comparison?
For a batter, start with career runs, centuries and highest score. For a bowler, start with wickets, bowling average and best innings figures. For a team, start with championships and match results. These groups answer different questions, so a single headline number cannot fairly rank every player and side together.
Always retain the opponent and season when discussing a peak performance. Those details allow readers to locate the original scorecard and understand whether the achievement came in a league match, knockout or final.
Records That Share a Match
Goa's 606-run stand and innings-and-551-run victory came in the same fixture, but the records measure different things. The partnership concerns two batters' time together; the margin concerns both teams' completed innings. Keeping those categories separate allows one match to be recognised accurately for several achievements.
