Sakib Hussain IPL Stats, Price, Age, Wickets, Debut, Team, Salary

Sakib Hussain announced himself to the IPL in the most dramatic way possible, taking four wickets on debut and joining an elite list of bowlers who have made an instant mark on the league. The right-arm pacer from Bihar, nicknamed the Gopalganj Express for his raw speed, turned a long wait for his first game into one of the great IPL debuts of recent years.

Bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 30 lakh at the IPL 2026 auction, Sakib bowled with genuine pace and composure beyond his years. Through his debut season he played 11 matches and took 15 wickets, finishing as one of the most exciting young Indian quicks in the league.

Sakib Hussain IPL Career Overview

Sakib Hussain’s IPL journey began before he ever bowled a ball in the league. Kolkata Knight Riders signed him ahead of the IPL 2024 season, recognising his domestic promise, but he did not get a game that year and was released before the next season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad then picked him up for INR 30 lakh at the IPL 2026 auction. He made his debut on 13 April 2026 against Rajasthan Royals at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad and produced a stunning spell of 4 for 24, becoming only the seventh player in IPL history to take four or more wickets on debut.

Early Life and Domestic Career

Sakib Hussain was born on 14 December 2004 in Gopalganj, Bihar, and grew up playing tennis-ball cricket before entering the state’s age-group system. He made his T20 debut for Bihar in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the 2022-23 season at just 17 years of age and made an immediate impression, taking 4 for 20 in only his second match.

His reputation grew as a bowler who could consistently clock speeds above 145 kmph while hitting the deck hard. In the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season he proved his red-ball credentials by claiming his maiden five-wicket haul, 6 for 41 against Arunachal Pradesh. Former India pacer Varun Aaron travelled to Ranchi to watch him during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and his deceptive slower ball and excellent fielding marked him out as a complete T20 package.

Across his domestic career he has taken 16 wickets in 6 first-class matches and 14 wickets in 13 domestic T20 games, numbers that kept IPL scouts tracking him for three seasons.

IPL Debut and the 4 for 24

Defending 216 against Rajasthan Royals at Hyderabad on 13 April 2026, Sunrisers handed Sakib his debut alongside fellow debutant Praful Hinge. Bowling his full quota of four overs, Sakib conceded just 24 runs and picked up four wickets, dismantling the Royals’ feared batting lineup as SRH won by 57 runs.

The figures put him in elite company. His 4 for 24 is tied for the fifth-best bowling performance on IPL debut, alongside Shoaib Akhtar’s famous 4 for 11, Ashwani Kumar’s 4 for 24 for Mumbai Indians in 2025, and Shadab Jakati’s 4 for 24 in 2009. Only Alzarri Joseph (6 for 12) and Andrew Tye (5 for 17) have taken more on debut.

Sakib Hussain IPL Season-by-Season Stats

In his debut season Sakib bowled 42 overs, conceding 397 runs for his 15 wickets. His economy of 9.45 reflects the high-scoring nature of the 2026 season and the pressure of bowling at the death, but his strike rate of a wicket every 16.8 balls showed genuine wicket-taking threat.

With the bat he scored 5 runs in 11 matches with a highest score of 5 not out, and he took 1 catch in the field.

Sakib Hussain IPL Auction Price and Salary History

Sakib entered the IPL at his base price of INR 30 lakh, the standard entry point for uncapped Indian players. His debut-season performances have put him firmly in the conversation for a bigger contract at future auctions.

Bowling Style and Strengths

Sakib is a hit-the-deck right-arm quick who regularly bowls above 145 kmph, rare pace for an Indian bowler his age. His action is repeatable and athletic, and he pairs his pace with a deceptive slower ball that Bihar coach Vinayak Samant identified as one of his biggest weapons.

He is comfortable bowling in all phases: with the new ball he attacks the stumps, through the middle overs he uses his change of pace, and at the death he backs his yorker. His fielding is another asset, he is quick across the turf and has a strong arm.

Career Best IPL Performances

The 4 for 24 against Rajasthan Royals on debut remains his signature performance, a spell that included the key wickets of the Royals’ top order and sealed a 57-run win. Beyond that headline spell, his 2026 season included several disciplined new-ball spells where he conceded under eight an over against strong batting lineups.

Sakib Hussain Records and Milestones

Sakib became the seventh player in IPL history to take four or more wickets on debut. His debut figures of 4 for 24 are the joint fifth-best by any bowler on IPL debut and the joint-best by an uncapped Indian bowler on debut, alongside Ashwani Kumar.

At 21 years and 4 months on debut, he is also among the youngest Indian pacers to take a four-wicket haul in the IPL. His rise from tennis-ball cricket in Gopalganj to an IPL debut four-for in under a decade is one of the league’s great scouting stories.
