The 2022 Season: Breakthrough with Rajasthan Royals
Hetmyer’s 2022 season was his best in the IPL. He scored 314 runs in 15 matches at an average of 44.86 and a strike rate of 153.92, repeatedly producing match-turning cameos in the middle order.
His ability to finish games under pressure was central to Rajasthan’s march to the final, where they lost to Gujarat Titans. It was the season that established him as one of the league’s premier overseas finishers.
The Finisher’s Role
Hetmyer bats at five or six for Rajasthan Royals, walking in with few balls left and expected to maximise every delivery. His career strike rate of 151.95 reflects a batter who attacks from the first ball.
His 2021 season with Delhi Capitals produced a strike rate of 168.05, the highest single-season strike rate of his career. He is especially destructive against pace at the death, clearing the ropes with a clean, powerful swing.
The Delhi Capitals Years
Hetmyer’s two seasons with Delhi Capitals in 2020 and 2021 were important in his development as an IPL finisher. He scored 185 runs in 2020 at a strike rate of 148.00, but it was 2021 that truly announced him as a death-overs specialist.
In 2021, he smashed 242 runs at a strike rate of 168.05, repeatedly rescuing Delhi from difficult positions. His unbeaten 53 that season was a masterclass in pacing a T20 innings, and he left the franchise as one of the most in-demand overseas finishers in the league.
The 2026 Season
Rajasthan Royals kept faith with Hetmyer ahead of the 2026 season at INR 11.00 crore, and he continued in his familiar finisher’s role. He played eight matches in the 2026 campaign, adding 78 runs to his career tally.
His longevity with the Royals, now stretching across five seasons, underlines the trust the franchise places in him as a specialist for the most pressurised overs of a match. Few overseas players have held a specialist finisher’s role at one franchise for as long as Hetmyer has at Rajasthan.
That consistency is remarkable given the volatility of the role. Finishers are judged on a handful of balls per game, and Hetmyer’s strike rate above 150 across his career shows he has delivered on that brief season after season.
Batting Style and Strengths
Hetmyer bats left-handed and generates enormous power through the leg side. His signature shots are the pull and the slog sweep, and he is particularly strong against short-pitched bowling.
He is also an athletic fielder in the deep, adding value beyond his batting. His all-round athleticism makes him a complete T20 package.
International Career Context
Hetmyer rose to prominence as captain of the West Indies side that won the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, where his leadership and batting stood out. He has since played international cricket for the West Indies across formats, including memorable ODI and T20I innings against top opposition.
His fearless approach has made him a regular in T20 leagues worldwide, from the Caribbean Premier League to stints in Australia and Pakistan. The IPL, though, remains the stage where he has produced his most consistent finishing performances.
