Siraj Becomes First Indian To Bag Four Wickets In One Over, Equals Fastest ODI Five-Wicket Haul

Mohammed Siraj became the first Indian bowler and fourth overall to take four wickets in an over in ODIs during the Asia Cup 2023 final against Sri Lanka. He also equalled the fastest ODI five-wicket haul, reaching the feat in just 16 balls.

Siraj started off with a brilliant maiden over after Jasprit Bumrah had sent Sri Lanka opener Kusal Perera packing in the first over itself. He then produced one of the best overs in the history of the asia cup, claiming four wickets to destroy Sri Lanka’s batting order.

Siraj first got rid of opener Pathum Nissanka with Ravindra Jadeja taking a brilliant catch at backward point. He then caught the in-form Sadeera Samarawickrama lbw in the third ball of his over. On the very next delivery, Siraj temped Charith Asalanka to drive the ball straight in the safe grasp of Ishan Kishan.

After being hit for a boundary in the penultimate ball of the over, Siraj came back with a beauty as Dhananjaya de Silva was caught behind to leave Sri Lanka reeling at 12 for 5. He came back in the fifth over to clean up Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka to complete his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs.

Siraj’s performance helped India bowl out Sri Lanka for just 89 runs, their lowest total in ODI history. India went on to win the match by 10 wickets and claim their record eighth Asia Cup title.
