This article covers Matthew Short’s IPL stats, price, team history, career records, and full profile.

Matthew Short Profile

Short grew up in country Victoria and came through the Australian domestic system as a hard-hitting top-order batter who could bowl useful overs of off-spin. His game is built on power through the off side and a fearless approach in the powerplay, which made him a natural fit for T20 leagues around the world.

Matthew Short IPL Career and Teams

Matthew Short’s IPL journey began with Punjab Kings, who signed him ahead of the 2023 season. He made his IPL debut that year and showed glimpses of his big-hitting ability in a handful of appearances. Like many overseas players, he had to wait for his chances in a settled squad, but his domestic form kept him firmly on the radar of IPL talent scouts.

His big break came at the IPL 2025 mega auction, where Chennai Super Kings bought him for INR 75 lakh. CSK have a long history of backing experienced T20 performers, and Short’s profile as a powerplay aggressor who bowls spin made him an attractive squad option. The move to Chennai gave him a fresh platform in a franchise famous for getting the best out of seasoned campaigners.

Matthew Short IPL Stats

Short’s IPL numbers are modest because his opportunities have been limited, but his strike rate reflects the aggressive intent that made his name in Australia.

The figures above cover his IPL appearances through the 2025 season. While the sample size is small, his domestic T20 record suggests there is far more to come if he gets an extended run in the playing eleven. His career strike rate in T20 cricket sits well above 140, which is exactly what IPL teams want from an overseas opener.

Big Bash League Heroics

It was in the Big Bash League that Matthew Short became a star. Captaining the Adelaide Strikers in the 2022-23 season, he produced one of the greatest individual BBL campaigns ever seen. Short finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 458 runs and also claimed 11 wickets with his off-spin, becoming the first player to top both the batting and bowling charts for his team in a season.

His all-round dominance earned him the Player of the Tournament award, and it was this season that put him on the map for IPL franchises and the Australian selectors alike. Short’s power-hitting puts him in the conversation with Australia’s most destructive T20 batters, and his ability to contribute in all three facets makes him the complete T20 package.

Australia Career

Short’s domestic form earned him a place in Australia’s T20I squad in 2023, and he made his international debut that year. He has since become a regular in Australia’s white-ball squads, valued for his versatility at the top of the order and his useful overs of spin.

His rise is a classic late-bloomer story. Unlike many Australian internationals who debut in their early twenties, Short had to pile up seasons of domestic runs before getting his chance. That grounding has made him a composed and adaptable player, comfortable opening the batting or floating in the middle order depending on the team’s needs.

Matthew Short Price and Salary in IPL

Matthew Short’s IPL price history reflects his journey from domestic star to international cricketer.

The INR 75 lakh deal with Chennai Super Kings at the IPL 2025 mega auction was a reward for his consistent T20 performances. For a player of his all-round value, franchises see him as a low-risk, high-upside squad pick who can cover multiple roles.

Career Records and Achievements

Short’s list of achievements is headlined by his historic Big Bash League season. Winning the BBL Player of the Tournament award in 2022-23, while leading the run charts and contributing with the ball, remains the standout chapter of his career so far.

He has also been one of the most consistent performers in Australian domestic cricket for the better part of a decade, with multiple seasons of 400-plus runs in the BBL. His elevation to the Adelaide Strikers captaincy underlined the respect he commands among teammates and coaches.

On the international stage, his maiden T20I appearances for Australia marked the culmination of years of domestic grind. Every all-rounder dreams of the IPL stage, and Short’s journey from Ballarat to the world’s biggest T20 league is an inspiration for late developers everywhere.

What Makes Matthew Short Special

Short’s greatest strength is his powerplay batting. He attacks from the first ball, targets the short boundaries, and puts bowlers under immediate pressure. His off-spin, while not his main suit, is more than handy, and he is an athletic fielder who can patrol the boundary.

In an era where teams crave multi-dimensional players, Short ticks every box. He is the kind of cricketer who can win a match with the bat, turn one with a couple of quiet overs, and save ten runs in the field. As the all-time list for most runs in IPL keeps growing, the next generation of overseas stars will need exactly this kind of versatility to break in.

Conclusion

Matthew Short’s IPL story is still in its early chapters. From his debut with Punjab Kings to his INR 75 lakh move to Chennai Super Kings, he has shown enough to suggest a bigger role awaits.
