Jadeja’s 37-run over remains the benchmark. Shepherd’s 32 and KKR’s 31-run chase against Gujarat are the only other confirmed 20th overs above 30 in this list.

1. Ravindra Jadeja vs Harshal Patel – 37 Runs

The most expensive 20th over in IPL history came during Chennai Super Kings’ match against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2021.

CSK entered the final over on 154/4. Harshal Patel had bowled well for most of the innings and had already taken three wickets.

Then Ravindra Jadeja completely changed the match.

Jadeja launched Harshal for five sixes and a four during an extraordinary over that also included a no-ball. Chennai collected 37 runs from the over, lifting their total from 154/4 to 191/4.

Jadeja personally scored 36 runs from the bat during the over. The extra run came from the no-ball.

The impact did not end there. Jadeja later took 3/13 with the ball as CSK restricted RCB to 122/9 and won by 69 runs.

The sequence remains one of the finest examples of one over completely changing an IPL match. Without the final-over assault, Chennai would have defended a much more ordinary total.

2. Romario Shepherd vs Anrich Nortje – 32 Runs

Romario Shepherd produced one of the cleanest final-over hitting displays in IPL history against Delhi Capitals at Wankhede Stadium in 2024.

Mumbai Indians entered the 20th over on 202/5. Anrich Nortje, one of Delhi’s fastest bowlers, had the responsibility of preventing MI from pushing the score beyond 220.

Shepherd attacked every length.

The over went 4, 6, 6, 6, 4, 6.

That meant Shepherd scored all 32 runs himself, with four sixes and two fours from six deliveries. MI jumped from 202/5 to 234/5.

Shepherd finished unbeaten on 39 from only 10 balls.

Those 32 runs became extremely important because Delhi replied with 205/8. Mumbai won by 29 runs — fewer than the number of runs Shepherd had scored from the final over alone.

The innings also reinforced Shepherd’s reputation as a specialist lower-order power hitter capable of changing games with only a handful of deliveries.

3. Rinku Singh vs Yash Dayal – 31 Runs

No final over on this list carries more pressure than KKR’s chase against Gujarat Titans in 2023.

Kolkata needed 29 runs from the final six balls to win.

Yash Dayal had the ball.

Umesh Yadav took a single from the first delivery, leaving Rinku Singh with 28 needed from five balls.

Rinku then produced one of the most famous sequences in IPL history.

He hit five consecutive sixes, scoring 30 runs from the last five deliveries and taking KKR past Gujarat’s total. The complete over produced 31 runs.

Rinku finished unbeaten on 48 from 21 balls.

Unlike Jadeja’s 37 or Shepherd’s 32, this assault came while chasing with no margin for error. One dot ball or mistimed shot would almost certainly have ended the match.

Instead, Rinku turned 28 required from five balls into victory.

The over transformed his career and remains one of the IPL’s defining finishing performances.

4. Hardik Pandya vs Ashok Dinda – 30 Runs

Before Jadeja, Shepherd and Rinku rewrote the records, Ashok Dinda’s final over against Mumbai Indians in 2017 stood as the most expensive 20th over in IPL history.

Mumbai were struggling to produce a big total against Rising Pune Supergiant.

Hardik Pandya changed that.

He hit the first three deliveries for sixes, followed with a four and then hit another six. Dinda later bowled a wide, and additional running pushed the over total to 30 runs.

Hardik himself scored 28 of those runs from the bat.

Mumbai moved from 154/7 after 19 overs to 184/8.

The remarkable part is that the assault still did not produce victory. Steven Smith made an unbeaten 84 for Pune, who chased 185 with one ball remaining.

5. Marcus Stoinis vs Chris Jordan – 30 Runs

Marcus Stoinis rescued Delhi Capitals from a difficult position against Kings XI Punjab in 2020.

Delhi were only 127/7 when Chris Jordan began the final over.

Stoinis had already accelerated late in the innings, but the last six balls took the recovery to another level.

He struck Jordan for two sixes and three fours. A no-ball and late running meant the over eventually cost 30 runs, with Anrich Nortje involved after Stoinis was run out.

DC finished on 157/8.

Stoinis had scored 53 from only 21 balls after Delhi appeared likely to finish much closer to 130.

The match later ended in a tie before Delhi won the Super Over.

That made the final-over assault even more important. Without Stoinis’ late hitting, Delhi would never have reached a total that gave them a chance to force the tiebreaker.

Most Sixes in a 20th Over of an IPL Innings

Rinku Singh’s five consecutive sixes against Yash Dayal are the most famous example of final-over six-hitting, but Ravindra Jadeja’s 2021 attack was statistically even more unusual because of the extra delivery created by a no-ball.

Jadeja hit five sixes in Harshal Patel’s final over, along with a four. One of the sixes came from the no-ball delivery, allowing the over to reach 37 runs.

Rinku also hit five sixes, but all five came consecutively from the final five balls of KKR’s chase against Gujarat in 2023.

Several other batters have hit four sixes in a 20th over.

Hardik Pandya struck four against Ashok Dinda in 2017. Jofra Archer hit four against Lungi Ngidi in 2020, with two no-balls making that over especially expensive.

Romario Shepherd also cleared the boundary four times against Nortje in his 32-run over in 2024.

Marcus Stoinis hit four consecutive sixes from the final four balls of Mohammed Shami’s 20th over in 2025, while Donovan Ferreira hit four sixes against Rashid Khan in the 2026 Qualifier 2.

Bowlers Who Conceded the Most Expensive 20th Overs

Death bowling is one of the hardest jobs in T20 cricket. Even experienced specialists appear on this list.

Harshal Patel holds the unwanted record after conceding 37 to Jadeja in 2021.

Anrich Nortje is next with 32 against Shepherd in 2024.

Yash Dayal conceded 31 against KKR in 2023, although only 30 came from Rinku because Umesh had taken the opening single.

Ashok Dinda, Chris Jordan and Lungi Ngidi have each conceded 30-run final overs.

Dinda deserves special mention because expensive 20th overs appeared repeatedly during his IPL career. ESPNcricinfo noted in 2017 that he had already conceded 25 or more in the final over on multiple occasions.

Rahul Shukla and David Hussey both conceded 27-run 20th overs, which at the time were IPL records.

Punjab Kings’ 2025 innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad ended with a spectacular assault on Mohammed Shami.

The final over produced 27 runs, and Stoinis hit the final four deliveries for consecutive sixes.

He finished unbeaten on 34 from only 11 balls.

Why the 20th Over Is So Difficult to Bowl

The final over offers bowlers almost no margin for error.

A length ball can disappear over midwicket. A full toss can be driven or scooped for six. Even a well-directed yorker can be manipulated by modern batters using ramps, reverse shots and deep crease positions.

Field settings also become predictable. Batters know five fielders can patrol the boundary, but they also know exactly where the gaps are.

The best finishers therefore prepare for specific death-over options rather than simply swinging hard.
