# 1. Suresh Raina (CSK)

The experienced left-handed batsman Mr. IPL Suresh Raina has scored many runs for the Chennai Super Kings over the years. He is the third highest run-scorer in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with 5,528 runs, just behind Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.

Raina made IPL history by becoming the first player to score 99 runs without getting out. He did this in the 2013 IPL against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at Uppal Stadium in Hyderabad.

Raina came to bat when CSK was struggling at 126/4 in 15 overs. He then started hitting the ball hard, scoring 99 runs off 52 balls, including 11 fours and three sixes.Raina’s amazing batting helped CSK score 223/3, and they easily won the game by 77 runs.

# 2. Virat Kohli (RCB)

Just a few days after Suresh Raina’s amazing performance in IPL 2013, another player missed a century by just one run. This time, it was Virat Kohli, who was leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore team. This happened during a match against Delhi Daredevils (now known as Delhi Capitals).

Kohli won the coin toss and decided to bat first. He played a fantastic innings, scoring 99 runs off 58 balls, including 10 fours and four sixes. Unfortunately, he fell just one run short of a century.

His team, RCB, ended up with a total of 183/4 in 20 overs. In response, Delhi could only manage 179/7, so RCB won the match by four runs. However, the fact that Kohli was dismissed for 99 was a big disappointment in this high-scoring game.

# 3. Chris Gayle (PBKS)

In 2019, during his time with Punjab Kings, Chris Gayle, also known as the ‘Universe Boss’, almost hit the first hundred of that season. This happened in a home game against Virat Kohli’s team, Royal Challengers Bangalore. Gayle hit an unbeaten 99 runs in just 63 balls, which included six fours and eight sixes, after Punjab chose to bat first.
He stayed in until the end of the innings but couldn’t hit the final boundary, leaving Punjab with a total of 173/4. In response, RCB chased down the target in 19.2 overs, winning by eight wickets.

# 4. Prithvi Shaw (DC)

Indian young star Prithvi Shaw made a big impact in the IPL during his breakout season in 2019. At just 19 years old, Shaw hit an impressive 99 against Kolkata Knight Riders. The match was Delhi Capitals’ first home game of the 2019 IPL at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. Shaw attacked the KKR bowlers from the start.

He quickly scored 99 runs off 55 balls, including 12 fours and three sixes.Shaw was on the verge of scoring his first IPL hundred but was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna in the 17th over. Delhi Capitals ended with 185/6. KKR matched this score, and the game was tied, leading to a Super Over which Delhi won.

# 5. Ishan Kishan (MI)

Ishan Kishan made a big impact in the cricket world with an exciting 99 runs against Virat Kohli’s RCB while playing for the defending champions Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2020.Chasing a target of 202 runs set by RCB, Mumbai was in trouble at 78/3 in 10 overs. Kishan then hit back hard, smashing six sixes during his 58-ball innings.

He was very close to scoring a hundred when Navdeep Saini got him out on 99. Mumbai matched RCB’s score of 201, taking the match to a Super Over, but they lost that too.

# 6. Chris Gayle (PBKS)

In the 2020 IPL season, famous player Chris Gayle had a tough time while playing for Punjab Kings against Rajasthan Royals. He was out after scoring 99 runs.Punjab Kings chose to bat first and scored 185/4, mostly thanks to Gayle’s 99 runs from 63 balls. He hit six fours and eight sixes.

Gayle was about to score a hundred, but Jofra Archer got him out in the last over.Rajasthan Royals chased the score in 18 overs and won by five wickets. Gayle’s out at 99 was a key moment in Punjab’s loss.

# 7. Mayank Agarwal (PBKS)

Mayank Agarwal is mainly known for his great performances in Test cricket, where he has already scored two double hundreds. But he has also done well in the IPL while playing for Punjab Kings, even captaining them in the last two seasons.

In one IPL 2021 away match against Delhi Capitals, he narrowly missed out on a century.Batting first, Punjab made 166 runs, with Agarwal carrying his bat and staying not out on 99 off 58 balls, hitting eight fours and four sixes.

He would have been disappointed to miss those final runs and get to 100*.Delhi Capitals chased down the target in the 18th over, winning by seven wickets. This meant another loss for Punjab Kings. So Mayank Agarwal came very close to an IPL hundred in that game, but his team lost the match.

# 8. Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK)

Ruturaj Gaikwad has performed brilliantly for Chennai Super Kings, playing important innings during their successful 2021 IPL season under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. The talented Indian batter continued his great form in 2022 by hitting an aggressive 99 runs against Kane Williamson’s Sunrisers Hyderabad team that year.

This happened during a high-scoring match in Pune.Gaikwad batted aggressively, hitting six fours and sixes in his 99 off 57 balls. He was on course for his first IPL hundred but got out to T Natarajan in the 18th over.

Chennai Super Kings scored 202/2 runs but could not defend this total as Sunrisers Hyderabad chased it down with three balls remaining. So Gaikwad narrowly missed out on an IPL century in that 2022 game despite his power-packed batting.

# 9. Shikhar Dhawan (PBKS)

The most recent player to score 99 in the IPL is the experienced opener Shikhar Dhawan. In his first season as captain of Punjab Kings, Dhawan almost scored a hundred against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023.

Punjab, batting first in Hyderabad, had a hard time gaining speed against the excellent bowling of Umran Malik and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Dhawan fought alone as Punjab could only score 143/9 in 20 overs.

However, Dhawan stood strong, scoring an unbeaten 99 off 66 balls with 12 fours and five sixes. Sadly, it wasn’t enough as Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down the target with 13 balls left.

Over the years in IPL, 9 famous batters have suffered the disappointment of getting out on 99 runs, just short of a century.Players like Raina, Kohli, Gayle, Shaw, Kishan, Agarwal, Gaikwad and Dhawan have all faced this tough situation after batting well and scoring 99 runs in different IPL matches.

These innings show how hard it is to score hundreds in IPL even for world-class batsmen. Their stories of coming very close to centuries but just missing out have been part of IPL’s exciting history over the last 16 years.

Scoring 99 requires batting well but the pressure of expectations can lead to mistakes. We hope no more batters have to go through the agony of being dismissed on the verge of an IPL hundred in future tournaments.
