#1. Suresh Raina (CSK) – The First to Score 99 Without Getting Out

uresh Raina, famously known as Mr. IPL, has been one of Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) most consistent performers. As the third-highest run-scorer in IPL history, Raina has played many match-winning knocks.

During the 2013 IPL season, Raina became the first player to score exactly 99 runs without being dismissed. This happened in a game against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Uppal Stadium. CSK was struggling at 126/4 in 15 overs when Raina stepped up and unleashed an attacking innings. He smashed 99 off 52 balls*, hammering 11 fours and three sixes, propelling CSK to a massive 223/3.

Despite missing out on a century, Raina’s brilliance ensured a dominant 77-run victory for CSK.

# 2. Virat Kohli (RCB) 

A few days after Raina’s memorable knock in IPL 2013, Virat Kohli suffered the agony of falling just one run short of a hundred. Playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) against Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Kohli played a spectacular innings.

After winning the toss, Kohli led from the front, scoring 99 off 58 balls with 10 fours and four sixes. He was in full control, dominating the bowlers, but unfortunately got dismissed at 99.

RCB set a target of 183/4, and although Delhi Daredevils fought hard, they fell short by four runs, giving RCB the win. However, the biggest disappointment remained Kohli’s dismissal at 99 in a high-pressure match.

# 3. Chris Gayle (PBKS)

Chris Gayle, the Universe Boss, is known for his explosive batting in T20 cricket. During the 2019 IPL, while playing for Punjab Kings (PBKS), he came agonizingly close to scoring the first century of the season.

Facing RCB in a home game, Gayle remained not out on 99 off 63 balls, blasting six fours and eight sixes. He dominated the innings but couldn’t get the final boundary, leaving Punjab with 173/4.

In response, RCB chased down the target in 19.2 overs, winning by eight wickets. Though Punjab lost the game, Gayle’s blistering knock remained one of the standout moments of the season.

# 4. Prithvi Shaw (DC) 

Teenage sensation Prithvi Shaw made a strong impact in IPL 2019, nearly scoring a hundred against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Feroz Shah Kotla.

Shaw looked in sublime form, scoring 99 off 55 balls, striking 12 fours and three sixes. He was on the verge of becoming one of the youngest players to hit an IPL century but was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna in the 17th over.

Delhi Capitals ended with 185/6, and the match ended in a dramatic Super Over, which DC won. Shaw’s near-century was a defining moment in that season.

# 5. Ishan Kishan (MI) 

Ishan Kishan showcased his hitting ability in IPL 2020, playing for Mumbai Indians (MI) against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).Chasing 202, Mumbai was struggling at 78/3 in 10 overs. That’s when Ishan took charge, blasting six sixes in his 58-ball 99. He was agonizingly close to his maiden IPL hundred when Navdeep Saini dismissed him on 99.

Mumbai matched RCB’s 201, forcing a Super Over, but ended up losing the match. Still, Kishan’s knock was one of the best of the season.

# 6. Chris Gayle (PBKS) 

Chris Gayle found himself in the same situation again, scoring 99 runs while playing for Punjab Kings against Rajasthan Royals. Gayle smashed 63 balls for his 99-run innings, with six fours and eight sixes. But in the final over, Jofra Archer dismissed him, denying him a hundred.

Punjab set a target of 186, but RR chased it down in just 18 overs, winning by five wickets. Despite the loss, Gayle’s knock proved he was still a dangerous T20 player.

# 7. Mayank Agarwal (PBKS)

Mayank Agarwal has impressed in both Test cricket and the IPL. In IPL 2021, while playing for Punjab Kings, he played a lone-warrior knock against Delhi Capitals.

Batting first, Punjab struggled but Agarwal stood strong, scoring an unbeaten 99 off 58 balls, including eight fours and four sixes. He carried his bat as Punjab managed 166/6.

However, Delhi chased it down in 18 overs, winning by seven wickets. Mayank’s 99* was a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing game for Punjab.

# 8. Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK)

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been a crucial player for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In IPL 2022, he played a breathtaking innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Pune.

Gaikwad was in complete control, scoring 99 off 57 balls with six sixes and six fours. He seemed certain to reach a hundred but was dismissed by T Natarajan in the 18th over.

CSK posted 202/2, but SRH chased it down with three balls to spare. Despite the loss, Gaikwad’s knock was one of the best of the season.

# 9. Shikhar Dhawan (PBKS) 

The most recent player to score 99 in the IPL is the experienced opener Shikhar Dhawan. In his first season as captain of Punjab Kings, Dhawan almost scored a hundred against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023.

Punjab, batting first in Hyderabad, had a hard time gaining speed against the excellent bowling of Umran Malik and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Dhawan fought alone as Punjab could only score 143/9 in 20 overs.

However, Dhawan stood strong, scoring an unbeaten 99 off 66 balls with 12 fours and five sixes. Sadly, it wasn’t enough as Sunrisers Hyderabad chased down the target with 13 balls left.
