What is a Super Over?

During a limited-overs match, if the score is tied, a Super Over is played to give the team a result. There will be two overs played by the two teams. In the Super Over, the team that batted second in the match will bat first again, and vice-versa. During the Super Over, the team that scores more runs at the end of the innings wins the match.

  • If a match is tied, IPL has a Super Over to decide the winner.
  • Since the IPL began in 2008, 14 games have been decided by Super Over.

IPL 2023 – Super Over Rules:

  • After the conclusion of the match, the Super Over shall begin within a 10-minute period.
  • In the Super Over, the team that batted second in the game will bat first.
  • The Super Over will be played on the same pitch.
  • Empires will remain at the same end as the last over.
  • The fielding side can choose which side to bowl from.
  • Fielding restrictions shall remain the same as the final over of the match.
  • In the IPL Super Over, teams are permitted to field three batsmen, two wicket keepers, and one bowler.
  • If one team fails to score more runs than the other after a tie, there will be an unlimited number of Super Overs.
  • The new rule of the IPL 2023 states that Super Overs are to be used to determine the contest’s winner within one hour from the actual time of completion of the match. In the last Super Over of the game, the match referee will inform both teams what time the game will begin. As an extraordinary case, if the multiple Super Overs that were played in the stipulated time could not decide a winner, then the game would be declared a tie, and both teams would receive a point.

Chennai Super Kings VS Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2010 season

A match that holds a special place in history of the Indian Premier League as one of its most important and fascinating matches.

MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, two world-class cricketers, were battling to win the match in two limited overs. In the first innings, KXIP batted first and scored 130 runs in 20 overs.

After losing two wickets to begin the game, Chennai Super Kings came back strongly and scored 97 runs in 12.5 overs after losing two wickets. In net 30 balls, they lost six wickets and needed 10 runs in the final over. However, CSK batsman can only score 9 and the match was tied.

OVERALL, IT WAS GREAT! With Suresh Raina at the crease, Chennai scored 10 runs in the Super Over. Despite Mahela Jayawardene scoring 6 runs and Yuvraj scoring the rest, KXIP easily chased the target. This made KXIP, the second team to win Super over in IPL.

Royal Challengers Bangalore VS Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2013 season

This season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was a jaw-dropping one. The Super Over was the second of the tournament and the second for Royal Challengers Bangalore since the beginning of the year. In the previous match against Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), RCB lost by 5 runs in the Super Over elimination and were playing against Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals).

After losing five wickets in 20 overs, the Daredevils have managed to score 152 runs in their 20 overs. There were contributions from all the batsmen, but the partnership between Irfan Pathan and Jadhav for 30 runs was truly remarkable. The Royal Challengers Bangalore, with Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers as their batsmen, scored 103 runs before losing their third wicket. But, suddenly RCB saw wickets and balls losing one by one, leading to a tie.

It’s super over! The Royals have scored 15 runs. The Daredevils were unable to reach the target, and only scored 12 runs. Ravi Rampaul, the bowler for Royal Challengers Bangalore, restricted Delhi batsmen by taking over two wickets in a row.

Royal Challengers Bangalore won the 2013 super over because of this.

Mumbai Indians VS Gujarat Lions in the 2017 season

Mumbai Indians were again saved by Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional bowling in the death over along with a Super Over. The now-defunct Gujarat Lions team took the field and managed to score 153 runs in 20 overs with nine wickets falling in the process.

However, the surprisingly exceptional bowling performance of Basil Thampy in the 19th over turned the entire game upside down as he snared two wickets.

In a nail-biting final over, the match ended in a tie, taking it into ‘SUPER OVER’. The Mumbai Indians batted first, and Kieron Pollard on the field scored 11 runs for the team. Bumrah again, his bowling skills restricted KXIP’s batsman, which resulted in only five runs being scored in his over. This resulted in Mumbai winning the match by five runs.

Kings XI Punjab VS Mumbai Indians in the 2020 season

This was the first time in the history of the IPL that a day went into two super overs. An exciting match between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab in Dubai was a heart-stopping experience. Fans of the game saw Mayank Agarwal and Chris Gayle hitting boundary after boundary off the bowling of Trent Boult. After being batted first and losing six wickets in a 20 over game, Mumbai managed to score 176 runs after being batted first.

King XI Punjab’s Deepak Hooda batted for the first time in IPL 2020, scoring 23 runs and not out. Despite reaching the target of 176 runs, KXIP was unable to reach their target of the first Super Over.

In the first Super Over, both teams have scored five runs each, thus forcing a second Super Over, which was won by KXIP.

In the Indian Premier League, the Super Over is a pioneering feature that makes it more interesting and exciting than ever before. It is also important to note that, like the rest of the tournament, Super Over has a set of rules to follow in order to determine the winner.
